  • Tyres on Standard Altitude Rims

    Hi Everyone

I pick up my brand new altitude tomorrow morning and im looking to upgrade the tyres asap.

Ive never really understood tyre sizes, but have been doing a bit of research and found myself a tyre calculator website which does the job nicely. (http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-calculator/)

The car comes standard with 265/65/17 - 30.6" on 7.5inch alloy rims.

I would be looking for somthing slightly bigger than stock to give me more clearance. Ive found the following possible examples:

    265/70/17 - 31.6" (Cooper AT3)
    275/70/17 - 32.2" (Micky Thompson ATZ)
    285/70/17 - 32.7" (Micky Thomson ATZ)
    275/65/17 - 31.1" (BFGoodrich All Terrain)
    275/70/17 - 32.2" (BFGoodrich All Terrain)

I also plan on doing a 2" lift almost immediatly.

So im a bit lost as to what to fit. Ideally would like the rear wheel cover to stay, but realise that may not be a possability.

The 150 section of the forum seems a bit light on with the type info?

The cart is the wifes daily driver, and I will use it on the beach and also with the local 4wd club - Nothing crazy, but stock tyres wont cut it.

    Any suggestions/advice?

There will be no issues with 265/70R17 and 275/65R17. Note that there will be noticeable power loss with tyres bigger then these. Actually, I run 265/70R17 and notice slower take offs but it will coast for longer. Change in diff ratios would be good for the bigger tyres. Watch out for change in speedo readings as well.

I fitted the 275/65/17 BFG All Terrains. They are only slightly larger in diameter (than standard), but they seem to fill the arch better without being over the top. The wheel cover fits easily over them. I have checked the speedo against a GPS and it is actually more accurate now. The difference in fuel economy is not worth mentioning, however the ride is much better with very little increase in road noise. I would like to have fitted 70 series tyres, but I wanted to retain the rear cover and most reports advise this is not possible with most of the popular 70 series AT tyres.

        Hi

Thanks - Sounds like I should be sticking with 265/70R17 - Just priced the following:

BF Goodrich All Terrains for $325
Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 Rib: 406
        Mickey Thompson ATZ 5rib: $397

        Cooper AT/3 - $400.00.
        Cooper STMaxx - ~$440.00

Just called a Micky Thompsen dealer and he reckens 285/70/R17's will fit with a 2" lift no problem (33") and would be legal.. But others here are not so sure. It seems there is a lot of misinformation around. Makes it very hard to make a decision.. Tyres are somthing that you have to live with for years, so I want to get the choice right.

The patrol I just sold had 275/65R17 and I wanted bigger :-)

The combination of 285/70R17 and 2" lift is definitely not legal. NCOP is limiting total lift of 2" (including any change in tyre sizes) without an engineer's certificate.

              Cool.

Has anyone else fitted after market tyres to a 150 series with 17" rims that would care to comment?

(the 2" lift will be going in soon, but thats the only mod I want to make that would effect tyre size).

Just confirmed - dunno why I wrote down the incorrect price of $440.00

                Proper prices: STMaxx 265/70R17 = $419 or $389 for the ST's in 265/70/R17.

Thinking maybe the Micky Thompens ATZ 4 rib thou.. So not sure.

I've got 265/70 on my 150. I fitted them before the lift and there was no problem.
No scrubbing or rubbing anywhere. As mentioned though, they do make the car a little slower off the mark and fuel consumption has increased.

I'm running 265/70 ST Maxx and would recommend them. On my D4D Auto they make the speedo accurate, instead of 3% under.

I wouldn't want to go any larger, there would be rubbing issues at full lock, and the loss of low down torque would be much more noticeable.

I was looking through a Bob Jane T-Mart website also for new tyres and they indicated that a 265/70 size tyre on a 150 series prado is not legal in NSW or SA.

I'm doing the exact same at the moment. Looking at LT265/70R17 in Coopers/BFG and Hankook.
I used to own an old set of Hankook's in a previous life and they were great. Anyone got a set of the Hankook ATM's that they can give a review of??? Great value at only $280/tyre.
I do like the Coopers in the wet. I like the BFG's for off the road. Just wondering what those Hankooks would be like. They look a good rip off of the MT 5 ribs.

Nothing is "legal" these days ;-)

Hi guys, long time reader, first time poster.I've lifted the prado 150 by about 45mm and I'm in the process of changing the standard tyres over to a 285/65/17. The 285 sit almost in line or above the upper control arm where as the 265 sit below the control arm. I can still fit my fingers between the back of the tyre and there is no rubbing at all on any of the guards or suspension components. My question is, the tyre and the top of the control arm is very close together and I'm worried it my be dangerous to have the tyre so close to the upper control arm, can anyone see a problem that may arise from the bigger set of tyres?

Yes, with standard rims a 285 tyre will rub on the UCA, like in the photo in this post:
