Tyre Change Over Price

Picked up my 2013 GXL TD Auto a few months ago. Been busy with work so have not fitted anything to it as yet other than it came with the Tojo Bull Bar, Mats and Tow Bar. I did not get after market tyres from the dealer as they were a real pain the arse to deal with.

Anyway what have other PP members paid when changing over from the standard dunlop rubbers to Bridgetone, Coopers etc? Are most tyre places happy to do a trade-in? Any recommendations in Perth?

I think tyre places will only be interested when the tyres are new, you'll get bugger all for used ones. You would be better off putting them on eBay or Gumtree yourself.

My dealer all but refused to handle the change over when I was looking at a new Prado, as he claimed it was now illegal to re-sell tyres that were not completely new, and so dealers weren't paying anything for the tyres on your vehicle. He finally admited that there was a market, and it was legal, but only if they vehicle was drive less than about 20k before it had tres removed - they must still have the manufacturing marks visible.

In the case of them being 3 months old, you will get precisely nothing for them from a tyre shop. I'd guess you might get $50 each if you sold them on Gumtree...

I just got $150 a tyre for my prado tyres (350km since new) from a tyre shop on trade in for Micky Thompson ATZ4 ribs.

Thanks for the comments. They have only done 1300km since new as I don't have a use for the Prado around town so I might shop around.

Cuiver, my tyres are just about shagged and while I'd love to put a set of Mickey Thompsons MT's on, the reality is the car is used on the Tarmac 98% of the time with the 2% being sand. Presume they are the 265/65/17's if so drop me a PM I'm interested.

Hi WCMG, Thanks for the offer. Yes they are the 265/65/R17s. At this stage I have not made up my mind whether I will change them now or wait. One dealer suggested that tyres with 50%/60% wear left in good condition are in demand and therefore I should stick with them until they are down to 50%/60%. Apparently you get about $80 to $90 each through a private sale as the tyre shops sell them for about $120.

No worries, personally I would run them into the ground then get into the right rubber for what you do, but it depends how long that takes for you. I wouldn't buy 50% tyres as the fitment cost and the short time you have with them (unless you put them on your trailer) isn't worth it. Good luck with what ever you decide, tyres are a bloody headache.
