  • What tyres do you run?

    Hi All,

I'm a proud new owner of a 2010 150 series GXL. And being new to having a prado I'm not really sure which tyres to run.

I'll be doing mostly highway driving with quite a bit of dirt roads and and also will be a bit off road mostly in rocky/ muddy/ hilly areas, and on accasion beach/sand. I'm looking for something hopefully not too noisy beause I'll be mostly on the highway but something still good for offroad.

So, I'm just wondering what everyone else has on their Prados and what tyres you would all recomend?

I upgraded to a set of Bridgestone D697 AT's recently and they are a brilliant tyre. More direct stearing, quiet on the road, good value and a vast improvement in the wet over the standard Grantreks. Highly recommended. I considered the Cooper AT3's and BFG's but the Cooper were expensive and I don't need the level of off road performance they deliver and I tried the BFG's in a mate truck and they were skittish in the wet. Just my two cents worth.

D697's on my 120. Great in the wet compared to the bf's I have run on previous 2 prados and hilux. Don't think they will do the distance the bf's use to but totally agree with Racketsports in regards to being skittish in the wet. My wife drives
my Prado a lot more then she use to with our 6 year old in it so I'd prefer to have safety over the tyres lasting a tad longer.... I've never had coopers so can't comment in regards to what their like but I based on what I have read about them delaminating turned me off buying them...but in saying that Plenty of people running coopers with no issues....cheers Steve

D697s in the original size (265/65/17) in the light truck variety. Very happy, good value.

Thanks guys. Do you find the Bridgestones wear out quicker than any others you've tried? I like the Bridgestones and the Cooper AT3 at the moment but not sure about the Bridgestones as some people say they wear out a lot quicker because they're a softer tyre which is why they're quieter.

Mine are definately wearing quicker then the BF's did but again I prefer the safety on the wet roads. I rotate every ten k...but certainly wont do the 90k I would have got from the Bf's. But the Bf's use to make me a bit nervous driving on wet roads. I still drive to the conditions but the D697's certainly feel sure footed in the wet over the Bf's....Cheers Steve

Another one right here for the 697's. Yeah, they won't do the k's a cooper or bfg will, but are alot quieter, grippyer and all over better for road use. At the end of the day most of us do most of our k's on the blacktop, so thats where i want my tyre to perform. The boss had 697's on his work ute (265/65R17 on current Hilux with about 600Kg constant load), has done roughly 60,000Km on them and will get another 20,000Km out of them, that is looking after them with rotates, alignments, etc. I like them as a tyre, and would get them again, rate them much better than the mickey thompson 4 ribs I've got on my cruiser.

Another D697 owner here and have been happy with them but they aren't great on rocky tracks. Ours have done roughly 20,000Ks and after the High Country and some rocky tracks out at Toolangi are already looking pretty cut up. They are made in Indonesia now and seem to be a softer compound rubber than the Japanese made D694s we had on the 95 series. They also have a much more rounded shoulder than the D694s which doesn't help with bite but probably makes them a better road tyre.

Just so you don't think everyone runs the bridgestones, I am on my third set of BFG's, when they are worn out I will probably fit another set of BFG's

Honestly though any of the better brands of AT tyres will do the job for you.

                    Cheers Andrew

I have just fitted a set of 265/70R17 Hankook AT-Ms. I have previously used their MTs on a previous vehicle and they were quite good so I figured I'd give the AT-Ms a run.

Have a look at the Goodyear Wrangler Adventure AT’s.

I put them on my 2012 Altitude recently. I've only done 3000km on them, but they are extremely quiet (much quieter than BFG's) and outstanding on the road and in the wet. They haven't yet been offroad, although I did about 100km of very wet gravel road driving and they were excellent. The online reviews indicate they are also very good off-road.

Not sure if they will get the 80-90000km that the BFG's will (I suspect they won't), but they come with a 50000km mileage guarantee (as long as the wear is even).

BFG's are a good tyre. They are a little noisy and I feel that after a few years, they seem to get quite hard and lose their footing in the wet - not an issue if you're doing 30000km per annum and changing them regularly, but if you're only doing 15-20000, you might not find them great in their 3rd or 4th year.

A sensible discussion on tyres! What is this site coming to? Thanks for the info here.

My Dunlops are on their last legs so this is very relevant to me. I've looked around even taking the trouble to look at what the miners / farmers use. That didn't help. In one mine site parking area the four 4WDs I looked at (all from the same company) had Michelin, Cooper, BFG and Bridgestone. One farm 4WD I saw had 3 different brands on the 4 wheels ... and none were the more popular brands.

After much reading / talking to people, I have to agree that any of the more popular brands will do the job with marginal differences.

I'm probably going to buy Bridgestone, but that will depend on the price I can get them for.

                          cheers

We run D697's on all our work vehicle. They hardly see bitumen and mostly run on road surfaces from formed gravel to goat tracks. We find them quiet, wear well and chip a lot less than the earlier models. My work 150 is over the 100thou and still on its second set with plenty of km to go.
I like them enough to put them on my 95 a few months ago. Miles better than the crap i had on there.
