  • Is it worth swapping tyres on brand new 150

    Hi all
I am going to pick up my new GXL prado next week and want to know others opinions on the factory fitted tyres AT20 I think ? Are they an ok all terrain or would I be better off going straight to tyre shop and getting some BFG AT. I have been put on to a place that may do a trade on the new tyres. I have had BFG previously on 100 series and found them quite good.
    Cheers Corny

I have bought 2 new Prado's, first one I ran the Grandtreks to 50 thou or so including a decent amount of outback and offroad work, really I didn't have any issues at all, one puncture in the Flinders Ranges the week before they were scheduled to be replaced.

Second new Prado I drove around 300kms before swapping them to BFG AT's, sold the Grandtreks to a member here for $150 a hoop.

I would say its a toss of the coin decision. If money is no concern then swap them and have peace of mind, if the coin is a concern then the Grandtreks aren't as bad as some would have you believe.

I don't regret either of my choices!

    Cheers Andrew

I've done 11k on the standard tyres which has included a few beach runs and outback gravel road. Since we use the vehicle to drive our son the Perth (600km each way) every 3-6 months I decided to wear these out first then go some BFG's. It really up to what you want to do and expect from the tyres.

I also decided to wear mine out before purchasing new tyres. But the way I am going its going to take 3 to 5 years to wear them out.

I only do gravel and sand work and they have taken me everywhere I want to go without any issues so for the moment I'm happy to wait.

I would ask the dealer what the change over price is and then make a decision.

Thanks for your responses guys, Guess I just wait and see what sort of trade I get for them. Planning on doing parts of the Gibb again in a years time and I did it last time in my 100 series with BFG's and no punctures or problems besides the chipping from the sharp rocks. like you say it is a flip of the coin decision???

            I agree with above observations.

Now have 60,000 on original grandtreks and starting to think about replacement before next years migration.

Travelled the Gibb and other outback roads and tracks in 2012 towing 1500Kg campertrailer. No problems. Drive to the conditions, know the limitations and use appropriate tyre pressures.

            Cheers

I'd swap them at delivery for BFG AT, but I am a white lettering out king of guy

I have also done the tyre swap both ways. Did 40000 on the grandtrex then swaped to BFG. Kept the old tyres and when brother bought his new 150 we put my old grandtrex on his old car, kept his near new BFG's then swapped them to his new car. The new grandtrex from his 150 are in my shed waiting for the day we are ready to upgrade one of the cars. New tyres are always are great selling point.

The problem with that approach is the tyres get old and past their useful shelf life while they are sitting in the shed. Of course a buyer might not check the date codes on the tyres, you might be lucky.

I don't have any experience except with the Grandtreks so cannot argue pros/cos vs other tyres. I have used the standard tyres for over 10,000km with little wear evident. This has included mild off-road and fair beach work without any issues. FWIW I didn't see any value in changing them as I wasn't going to be doing any mud work or hardcore off road. If you plan to do this type of driving it really is a no-brainer. Otherwise I'd save my coin for another 40-50 thousand Ks then possibly look at some other All-Terrain tyres like the Bridgestone Dueler A/T D694 (of which I have read some great reviews).
So far I have no complaints with the standard Gratreks.

Tyres have a shelf life of 5 years. That gives us 4 years to use them. Mine will go next near and brothers the following.
If only Mr Toyota would increase the tow weight of the Prado when the v6 twin Turbo goes in the new shape.

                        Just swapped from GrandTreks

I've recently changed tyres from 60,000+ km GrandTreks still with 10,000+ left in them but heading for the Flinders so thought I needed something with 'lots' of tread. No punctures on the Grand Treks but only had done a couple of thousand km of 'rough' road work.

Something to consider is the tyre you buy. Was talking to people in the Flinders who are only getting about 800km (very hard use) out of their well known brand tyres ... so are tending to use cheap tyres (and getting about the same mileages) at about 50% the price. They rarely have punctures but are fastidious about pressures and replacing when tread about 75% worn.

                        cheers
