  • Fuel consumption on larger tyres

    Hello all

I was wondering what changes in fuel consumption people have seen when changing to larger dia tyres.

Additionally have you noticed a reduction in driving performance? eg. Sluggish from the lights or poor engine braking when in low range

    thanks

I have 2 sets and change them when on trips.
      265/65R17 Grandtrek AT20s
      265/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R

There is noticeable difference between the 2 in terms of acceleration and braking. Consumption also goes up approximately 1l/100km. Most of the good 4WD tyres are in the 70 profile. You will just need to check if they are legal and whether your insurance company will cover you.

This is not a great comparison, but it may be insightful.

I have a 90 series 2.7L 4cyl and for urban/highway mix driving was getting approx 12.7L/100km on 225/75R16 29" Cooper AT3's AT and after changing to 235/85R16 32" Cooper STMaxx MT (approx 8% size increase), I now get approx 14.7L/100km (approx 14% increase)

And yes a little bit more sluggish off the lights however, much better off-road on trails, which is what I use mine for, (not a daily drive).

If you increase your tire size you will need to use a larger throttle position to make the car do what it needs to do. I noticed a big difference when I just went to new AT'S at the same size .

Our consumption increased about 1.5l/100 with 70 series MT STZ's from the crappy grandtreks in 65 profile. A little slower acceleration but ours is V6 so kicks butt anyway

Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

When I went from the worn out grand treks to new ATs there was a significant drop in my fuel range and throttle response and that was just with the same standard size tires on the v6.

                    I have a 150 GXL Diesel.

                    I went from 265/65/17 to 265/70/17
My consumption went up from an average of 10.6 to 11.8

I also have a 2" lift and roof racks. My speedo now also matches up perfectly with the GPS

I went up to 285/70/17 (33") so fuel consumption went up from approx. 11.0 to approx. 13.0
I have a throttle booster fitted so its not sluggish of the mark and the scan gauge has been set for the larger tyres to get the correct speedo speed.
