  • Legality of 265/70/R17 on 2016 Prado

    G'day,
Just signed up and paid the deposit on a new Prado GXL, pick up is in 4 weeks. This is our first 4 x 4 and was looking at having the 265/65 R17 tyres upgraded to be interchangeable with our soon to be picked up Ultimate Camper which has 265/70/R17 Cooper S/T Maxx.
From what I have read, the maximum legal increase in diameter is 15 mm which makes this illegal. I see heaps of Prado's with these or larger.
Does anyone know what are the ramifications regarding the law and insurance?
    Thanks for your assistance.

    Cheers
    Rob

15mm only applies to a passenger car, its legal on a 4WD. That increase is only 26.5mm.

      VSB14 Section LS:

      4.2.4 Overall Nominal Diameter
The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to a passenger car or passenger car derivative must not be more than 15mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.
The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to:
      - 4WD passenger vehicles specifically designed for off-road use (typically MC ADR category). All wheel drive (AWD) vehicles including those AWD vehicles that may be certified as MC ADR category, (also commonly known as soft roaders) are not included in this category;
 - 4WD goods vehicles and their 2WD equivalents if the chassis and running gear are essentially the same as the 4WD version (N ADR category); or
 - any medium weight goods vehicle (NA2, NB ADR category).
Must not be more than 50mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle.

        Thanks for the speedy reply.
Matching tyres and rims it is.
Was quoted $290.00 each change over from my local Tyre Power. Any better deals known in Melbourne?

        Cheers

Just be aware if your are thinking of a suspension lift as well that you need to conform to the following as well

By Change over do you mean you dont get the rims back? you can sell the rims for a fair bit, you might be better off selling them separately. might want to look into it

Just throwing something out there, how about looking to do the reverse on your trailer. Having a trailer with the same sized rim and tyre maybe a good way to go. I've setup myself so my trailer tyres and rims fit my prado and vice versa. I changed my hubs on my trailer to suit the the prado with the same PCD and studs and the rims have the same offset too. Now I have two interchangeable spares when towing. One on the Prado and one on the trailer.

Something to worry about is, if you increase the overall diameter of the prado tyre, is it may not fit under rear carrier cover. Others could advise here but it has been an issue in the past for others.

The 150 cover is bigger than the 120 version but then mine is just collecting dust in the shed.

Note here that the lift due to the 265/70 tyres is only 13.25mm (you're only raising the car by half the overall diameter change, which as r4ndll pointed out was 26.5mm)

                          Hi TRsmith,
By change over, It is only changing the tyres, keeping the standard rims

                              Hi Spilsy,

I take it you have 265/70 tyres - any issues with them rubbing etc or handling as I am I am thinking of up-grading to that size.

                              Thanks.
