Just a followup fitted the hankook dynapro rf10 in 275/65/18 size, they fill the guards up nicely, on the road are very quite for a aggressive tyre pattern I Even got the price down a bit more so I'm as happy as a pig in mud. Did some mild off-roading the other day great tyre they went well, if your looking for a light truck construction tyre for the Vx or Kakadu consider these tyres. The hankook tyres for some reason in the states are more expensive than big 3 Micky t, bfg and coopers I think we have been paying a premium for these tyres because of the marketing campaign in Australia, just my two bobs worth.

Hi all
I also have been looking for a suitable AT light truck replacement for the Dunlops. wanted to stay with 265/60/18 so as the spare wheel would fit.
Really the only choices were BFG KO 2 or Bridgey 697's. Coopers AT3 were only in a passenger construction. Now they have a 265/60/18 AT3 LT.
Was quoted $369 / tyre, fitted. Thinking this will be my choice

You also said you might entertain the thought of fitting a chip, I myself am in the same position the prados are by means a power house from factory and adding bigger tyres does not help but there is a company I've been looking at lately they do ecu retune/ re flash they are getting good results for minimal outlay ( I have no personal interest in this company but on the sunny coast and abroad they have a very good reputation) visit their Facebook page just autos and see results.
You will require unequal length springs at all 4 corners to sit level.
Dobinsons are one of the few around that have this correct. If I had my time again and knew what I know now I would have gone straight to Dobinsons!

I am about to shortly pick up my new Kakadu and I am contemplating getting the tyres changed to BFG KO2 ATs before I pick it up. Has any one had experience with the standard Dunlops and then changed to the BFGs? I was wondering about how much extra capability you get with the BFGs and also if they are noisier and harsher than the Dunlops.
Cheers,

hi bjl,
My personal opinion is that an AT tyre will look better, provide more protection on the sidewalls and usually offer greater millage. When I have finally worn out my original Dunlop AT 22s on the Kakadu I will certainly be upgrading to a legitimate Light Truck construction AT tyre.
However in saying that, I have currently done 25,000kms on the AT 22's so far with absolutely no dramas at all. Trips we have done so far in the Kakadu are Fraser Island, The Otways National Park, Robe to Beachport and numerous 4x4 properties where the terrain has been extreme to say the least. (Extreme rocks, mud, sand and step hill climbs)
In MY experience (I realize others opinions will differ) it is more about having the correct tyre pressure, choosing the right 'line', and being confident behind the wheel.
The Kakadu has some pretty cool additions like the KDSS, a Rear Diff locker and crawl control all of which will help you negate even the toughest terrain with ease. So far I have not been left behind on any track due to my tyres! (Unfortunately, I cant say the same about the clearance of my bash plates!)
On the bitumen the AT 22's are quiet, handle very well in the wet and appear to be wearing well. (Currently 8mm of treat left on them)
Again, just my experiences and my take on upgrading from the original Dunlop AT 22's on the Kakadu.
Enjoy the new bus!

Hi Ben,
Thanks very much for your most informative response. It sounds like the Dunlops are a fairly capable tyre from your experience. Currently I have a Hyundai Terracan which I have had two sets of BFG KO's on, and got 100,000km out of the first set, with no dramas. I have however been quoted $1,500 to upgrade to the KO2's on the Prado and am really wondering if it is really worth that much (a full set of 5 265/70/16 KO for the Terracan only cost $1,250).

I had been looking around for 275/65r18 and there were a few.
Bob Jane had a sale on Yokohama geolander 360 a tyre and buy 3 get 1 free so reasonable price
Usually decreasing rim size through a range as long as one badge has that size in that series model it is ok but given KDSS is specific to the VX and kak I guess it could be questionable.
Tyre placard is generally the correct method but the laws are loosely written, well in vic any way ( not up to speed every where els )
Wheel and suspension modification rules state model not badge and can't see tyre placard written anywhere
Coming from a 79 series was quite happy using the work mates tyre size ( 32" OD ) and using that as my GX was only 30.6" and I guess 90% of people must think the same asevery second one runs 285/75r16s. Then again so do a lot of other ute and there not within 50mm of any badge.Last edited by Phs; 01-11-2016, 06:57 AM.
