  • Will aftermarket tyres fit under the spare wheel cover?

Because the new Prado comes standard with a spare wheel cover I thought i would pose this question.

Alot of people had problems with fitting the hard and soft cover when they got BFGs, Coopers etc.

I would think if you got a GXL with 17inch rims the wheel cover would still fit with BFGs due to the wheel cover having to go over the 18inch rims on the VX and Kakadu.

Anyone got the wheels changed over straight away and have had the experience?

Guess we could start a thread with Tyre Brand/Size and whether it fits.

    cheers

Re: Will aftermarket tyres fit under the spare wheel cover?

    Hi
This is my first post so sorry if I stuff it up. I tested this last weekend with a mates Cooper STs. He is running 265/70 R17 on his 120 GXL and that fitted fine under my spare wheel cover. I think the difference in diameter between the 18" with lower profile tyres is about 1mm whereas the 265/70s R17 are about 25mm greater than the 265/65 R17. I dont think you will get anything much bigger than 265/70s under the cover.

Still didnt look bad with the cover off.

    Cheers

The camera is not part of the cover but rather part of the bracket.

              Thanks ABR.

This looks a little problematic if you wanted to add anything extra to the rear tyre holder (such as the 4x4 equip axe/shovel holder).

                So just to confirm BrettT

You have either a 150 VX or Kakadu, and the hard spare wheel cover fitted over your mates 265/70/17 wheel and tyre?

If you can let us know if it fit correctly, i.e. able to be locked and secured properly, I think that would be of interest to those people like myself who haven't heard the end of retiring the hard spare wheel cover off the 120, to put 265/70/17 tyres on.

                Cheers, Rhet

Re: Will aftermarket tyres fit under the spare wheel cover?

I just picked up a GXL 150 Series last week and have had 265/70R17 BFG AT's fitted. The tyre place just threw the spare tyre in the back so last night I thought I'd try and get it under the tyre cover. To put it mildly, it was a challenge. I got all of the top clips in place and soon as I did up the clamp on the bottom of the cover, they popped back out. I gave it another go and managed to presuade it on, but still didn't manage to get all of the clips around the bottom on. It still looks like it's on OK and once I fastened the bolt in the centre I was happy it wasn't going to fall off. Once the tyres have done a few thousand k's it would be easier I would assume. That was my experience anyway.

Fitted BFG 265/70/17 and the tyre cover will NOT fit. Camera still works fine.

                        Nifty

i fitted BFG ATs 265/70R17 and i fit the tyre under the cover. it was a little tight, but it went on straight and is locked on there, no problems.

i plan to take it off when i go on a trip so i don't have the hassle of trying to take it off under pressure.

To ask a stupid question, can you fit a 275/65R17 on a stock 150 Rim that normally takes a 265/65R17?
