  • Beadlockers

    Hey Prado guys,

Have gotten sick of popping beads and having to change tyres on the sand.

Am wondering whether anybody has this system and how good it is - http://www.secondair.com.au/index.htm

    Any advice would be appreciated.

To fit them you need to drill a second hole in your rim rendering them unroadworthy

      Re: Beadlockers

I realised that, but the guy from Beadlocker Australia said that he has had face to face meetings with reps from Vic Roads and RTA NSW who both saw no issue with them, although he cannot provide any disclaimer to confirm this...

He also mentioned there have been a few insurance claims without issue.

        Re: Beadlockers

Here's a response from a mate who has them when I enquired a while ago

        - Valve for 2nd tube needs a flat inner surface and the 100 series rims are too narrow. I kept getting air leaks around 2nd valve and in the end had to buy 4 non toyota rims .

        - The valve in the tube has come away twice from tube. Tube goes down but driver is not necessarily aware because still have air in main tire. The result is broken tube flaps around and overheats tyre. Result : 2 buggered mtr tires with great slabs of molten rubber.

        - Suggest if you do get them only get 2 front - tyres come off at low pressure when turning and 95% of time its the front.

hey jace, how have you been rolling the tyres off the rims, ive done some really dumb shit in 16years of driving in the sand and never once have i rolled a the bead or lost air out of the tyres. ive run pressures some bloody low pressures never had any trouble, just my opinion beadlock seems a bit of an overkill and maybe an un necessary expense cheers samo

Just how low are you running your tires?

Only popped a bead once and that was at 4 psi being a numpty trying to get out of a sand bag..

            Bead locks illegal on road..

              Re: Beadlockers

              Hey Samo,

Despite living in Canberra, I'm from Newcastle and do all my beach work on Redhead-Blacksmiths beach, quite soft as you'd probably know! I regurlarly go down to 10psi (on stock tyres) to get up the more challenging stuff like 3rd creek dune and the ones over behind it, some of which require a bit of pace and some fairly sharp turns at the top (I know thats asking alot of the beads). My mates in their 75 series' with 35's etc etc are always blown away that I can get up in my stock shorty Prado, but they never pop beads (unless they roll as one did the weekend before last - wasn't pretty  ).

Anyway, have decided not to go with the beadlockers as I'd rather not risk the legality implications, not to mention D4D's comments. Will just wait till I get proper tyres. Have worked out that if I keep my fronts at 14psi and lower the rears if necessary the beads are more stable.

              Cheers guys.
