  • Tyre Pressures - what do you run?

    Hi

what tyre pressures do you run in your standard tyres? I have a Kakadu which I think I should check tyre pressures soon as they are probably low due to not checking them since new .... 2500km's ago. I mainly drive around town and some highway work.

Read the manual which suggested 29 psi for the standard tyres on a GXL, however, the dealer recommended 35 psi.

yowie i wouldnt run 29, that seems a tad low, seeing that the 150s r a bit porkier than 120s, at that pressure you would find the tyre wear over a period of time would wear the outside shoulders of the tyre and would get a lot of tyre roll in corners, 35 would be a better choice, ive got cooper st on my 120 and i run 40psi, they seem to wear better at that pressure, yeah it rides a bit firmer but you get that, thats just my opinion. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

120 GXL also recommends 29psi for all loads, Toyota dealer confirmed this (they would not recommend any different as this would leave them liable if any damage occurs)

They recommend 29 so that we all wear out the grandcraps early then get some decent rubber without getting in trouble with the missus.

Yes Samo, have Coopers on my 80 series cruiser which have yet to sell. Run them at 40 psi, and rotate the tyres every 10,000 km, front to back, side to side and diagonal. Even wear all round. Added a camber adjustment kit years ago to the front nearside to reduce tyre scrubbing due to the Japanese setting which is not compatible with Aussie roads. Hopefully will not need a camber kit on the 150 Prado.

Re: Tyre Pressures - what do you run?

My 120 came from the tyre place set to exactly 38 on all the four new tyres. After a highway run, they are 42. Assuming the 4psi rule its right, 38 is good.

New Cooper AT3 LT spec. 36psi road (rises perfectly to 40psi hot, plus 4 rule).

                    Dirt track 28psi.

Mud - haven't found any yet.

Sand - start at 16psi for soft sand.

I tend to stick close to the 4 psi rule, this works out to 36 psi on road, muddy tracks about 22 psi and sand I normally start at 18 and go from there.

                      These a all cold pressures.

A good easy check to see how your tyres are wearing to the pressure in them is to run your hand over the tyre.If there is a dip in the middle you are over inflated. If the centre is high you are under inflated.I run 32 psi in my Bridgestone Atrs and they are as square as the day they were purchased. Now up to 40,000 ks.

It was recommended 40psi when I got my MT ATZ4RIB's for even wear. Done about 10,000 and due for 4 wheel balance/ 5 wheel rotation and wheel alignment. Wear looks even so far.

On the dirt I run them around 23psi and haven't let me down yet.
