  • New rubber, new size?

Would anyone be happy to provide some feedback on their tyre choice please? First time for new rubber for me on the Prado.

Currently running 265/65/17 & have been told to go up to 265/70/17?

Ive read thru the forum & there seems to be a lack of power. Is it worth going up in size for the 15% off-roading I do? And I’m up for 5 tyres! Same people are telling me to go BFG’s but the reviews on the lack of grip in the wet is scaring me. I live in mountains-it’s wet! Perhaps I should look at Toyo AT11??? There seems to be a few members on here running these.

Any feedback is appreciated before I lay out the big bucks $$$$ thanks

    cheers

Can’t mate any recommendations on the tyre but I stepped up in tyre size as you’re planning and I noticed 2 things with the larger diametre tyre 1 less tongue and as result of having to drop back a cog... poorer economy city driving at least... would expect an improvement on the highway. Odd thing though was the speedo was more accurate

The thing is if your going off-road you want something that will do the job as it may very well cost you more in the long run

I look at it like you want the best off road tyre that performs to the level you like on road, noise / handling ect

      Micky T P3s
      coopers Stmaxx

The TOYO AT2 is a great tyre but it won’t perform like the other 2 off-road and if your into softer off-roading / touring this will suit well

For me happy to get amongst it id pick the P3s

Thank you both very much! I didn’t even consider the MTs. Will def have a look at them.
And Pradosaur, would you make the same decision again going up a size?

I had the Mickey Thompson Baja atz p3 got 75k out of them.. in terms of the size up... they were on. V6 petrol Pajero.. I don’t think I’d do it again size wize ... it just cost too much torque but that was a petrol motor ...nice to have that bit extra clearance but to be honest I didn’t need it

I am running that size on a 2.8 prado lost drivability is minimal, fuel usage up about a 1 litre per 100

Good size for a 1 set does all just shy of 32”, the extra sidewall provides better comfort and traction when aired down.

keep in mind if you go a LT tyre it will be harsher that the std passenger set and extra sidewall high in an LT helps a lot

What sort of 4wd are you going to do ?

Cheers Rockhop. We mostly do your standard 4x4 bush tracks in Melb, big river way, Craig’s hut etc. personally I like to get the car home with All straight panels, but you know sometimes when you’ve committed to the track there’s no going back. We’re doing Kakadu next year so prob hit some sandy river beds also on that trip & lots of corrugations!

I guess probably like everyone else I’m trying to find a good all round tyre, 85% of the time I’m on the black stuff with the family.

And Pradosaur; thanks for your thoughts on the up size- my prado has had a lift & I’m not yet sold that the extra tiny bit of clearance is worth the loss of power & fuel economy

Hi I've just gone from the 245/70R17 to the 265/70R17 on my 150 with 2 inch lift there was no difference in power that could be felt. The 245 were the bfg all terrains now I've got the bf muds on in the 265, fuel is 1.1 litres per 100 worse off but they are muddys so was expected. Both have been great tyres not slippery on wet bitumen at all. If your going from the 265/65R17 to 265/70R17 there will not be a difference in felt power or fuel usage would not be that different. I've had the coopers at3 and stmaxx and they are very good tyres 133000 out of the at3 and sold car before wearing out the stmaxx both really good just come down to what you like the look of.

I made the switch to 265/70/17 last month after running the standard 65 profile for the previous 14 years. My observations are:
Speedo has been corrected, aligns to within 1% of gps; (this is fantastic)
The higher gearing is noticible in terms of reduced acceleration and reduced engine braking; (I don't like this)
My seat of pants feeling is that there is more tyre flex turning into a corner (although I have no objective way to measure/prove this)
Fuel consumption, too early, don't know yet - (remember you have to factor in a 3.4% odometer correction if you are calculating and reporting fuel consumption on 70 profile tyres) (odometer says you did 1000km for the tank but your actual distance was 1034km)

In summary there are both positive and negative points to switching to a larger profile tyre. Would I do it again? ...this is a hard one....I think that the answer would be "yes" for the joy of having a speedo that is correctly calibrated. In 4 years when I am looking to replace these shoes the higher gearing will just feel normal even if I don't like it so much now.

Hi, Looking for changing original tyres on 2018 VX to 275/70R18 MT P3. Is this even doable without performing any modification on the vehicle?

That tyre is pretty much a 33" tyre, so you'd need at least a 2" lift and would want a different offset wheel (to push the wheel further out from the diff).

I've got the same diameter tyre on mine (10mm wider too), but changed to a 0 offset rim and I've got a 2" lift. The tyres still scrub a tiny bit on the mudguards with this setup
