  • Thoughts on spare

    Brainstrust...

So... joined a 4wd club. Doing training and didn't actually realise the spare was a different pattern. My bad. Didnt check when buying... moving on i have a few options...

I have 4 Hankook Dynapro ATM 265/65R17 LT load rated E tyres in good condition. Maybe 15k on them. 1x Dunlop Grandtrek from stock, never used.

In any option will sell grandtrek on gumtree for whatever i can get.

    1. Buy another Hankook. Price 269 installed.
    2. Change all tyres for new (expensive not preference)
    3. Checked gumtree. There are 5 BFG Ko2 off a ute reported done 10k on them. Asking $750 negotiable. 265/70R17. Try to sell Hankooks on gumtree. Cop the difference maybe $300-400. Any issues using these on a stock suspension (lift planned but not immediately)?

Cannot find a spare Hankook on gumtree as a cheapy.

The instructor wasnt a huge fan of the Hankooks due to the less agressive side wall tread. I have used them a bit off road and no complaint but take/trust his advice.

    Are there any options missed?

    Thanks all.

I would leave it as is. When you wear the Hankooks down and replace them keep one as spare if you stick with 265/65.

Size more critical than pattern. Wear out what you have and Don't worry about the spare. It is totally useable.

Actually if the spare is an original tyre with a date code well before 2013 I would think about changing it. As above same size is more important than having 5 matching tyres. If you are likely to wear the Hankooks out in the next year dont worry. I am currently running Scorpian ATPlus in 265/70 and my spare is a fourvyear old KO2 about half worn. Dont care...

Age of spare is critical. I had a blowout on a 'brand new' 6 year old spare. Tyres have a 6 year shelf life.
