Just took delivery of a new 150 GX. Want to get another spare tyre just on a steel rim. Went to Bob Jane today and they had had trouble tracking one down. Does anybody know where I might be able to get one Perth.

I believe that the 3rd party manufacturers now have suitable wheels for the 150. There was a thread about it but I can't find the exact one. Here are a few I did find.

Yes you can run 120 steel rims on a 150 series as I currently have a set on my 150.

Re: Steel Rims for 150 GX
You can run 120 rims on a 150 but it was not designed to because it will make the wheel track smaller and you may increase the risk of instability. If anything happens and the rims are the cause, expect your insurer to reject the claim as the 120 rims has altered the spec of the 150's wheel track.

Re: Steel Rims for 150 GX
Had my Local Dealer do a search for me and they could not find any steel rims for a 150. I asked about fitting rims designed for the 120 and they just advised that due to the possible insurance issues, they would not fit them.150 GXL Glacier White D4D Auto,Headlight/Bonnet Protectors, Weathershields, Black widow Drawer / Fridge Slide, ARB Fridge, Satin Black ARB Delux Bull bar, Hema 5" GPS, ARB Dual battery System, Genuine Toyota Towbar, Tinted windows, Sandgrabber Mats, IPF 900 Xtreme Spotties, GME 3440 UHF Radio, Safari Snorkel, Toyota TPMS,

Re: Steel Rims for 150 GX
I have a 150 GX with the standard rims and tyres AT 20 Grandtrek
I used these on my 10500 trek to Cape York in May june
Went ok but did not do the Hard trek
Neeed to now ger something with better traction so have always had BFG on a 100 series and 80 series.
Normally get 100-140KMS from them!
In all the forums it seems Steel Rims are unobtainable.
Some say use steel rims from 120 series but others say NO, they will void the Insurance?
Some say use a Speedie Wheel, alloy I think but want Steel for the bush especially if have to use Tyre Pliers.
So is there anyone out there who has done a switch to something else?
Can I use the GXL Rims with BFG All terrains but do they come in steel?
I do know I can fit Cooper tyres annd Pirelli AT to these rims but do like the BFG all terrains for side wall integrity.

Leighland

Generally, the Toyota alloys are the flanged type and steel wheels use a tapered nut. However, the Speedy Grande wheels initially came out with the flanged type but then switched to tapered nuts.

Re: Steel Rims for 150 GX
The wheel nuts are different for steel and alloy rims. Alloy rims will use a step which sits inside the wheel stud opening of the rim. Steel rims use a taper to centre the stud in the opening. The reason for this is alloy isn't a strong metal and the taper on steel rim nuts could crack the alloy rim.
120 steel rims fit on fine and used them on several trips away.
As for insurance, for a claim to be rejected it has to be proven that the particular modification played a part in causing the accident. By loading the rear of your car with heavy things at the top, there for increasing your centre of gravity, would be more dangerous than 5mm less off set. By actually putting LT tyres on these rims the tread of the tyre is actually the same as the Grandtrek with its softer sidewall (which bags out more) on the standard rim.

Re: Steel Rims for 150 GX
Hey guys, I started this thread way back in June and still have not got any joy from looking everywhere. I am an amateur in this but I think that one of the issues is the wheel size on the Prado 150GX - 17 inch by 6.5 inch. The 150 GXL is - 17 inch x 7.5 inch. The one 120 series was 17 inch x 7.5 inch. I assume wheel width has a big thing to do with it ?

Re: Steel Rims for 150 GX
The factors that influence whether a wheel is suitable is:
- Diameter
- Width
- Offset
- Backspacing
The major differnce between the 120 & 150 wheel is the offset. Give the wheel manufacturers some time and they will come up with a suitable one for the 150. Or keep an eye on ebay. I have already seen a set of 4 there.
The 245/70R17 is not too bad. At least there are decent 4WD tyres in that size.

Re: Steel Rims for 150 GX
I am about to put 120 steel wheel 17 x 7.5 rims with Bridgestone D694Lt rubber on my 150 GX. Not particularly worried about the 5mm offset difference but can you add a 5mm spacer to fix the issue? This might be a stupid question as I am not a wheel expert.
Thanks
