  • Aftermarket wheels for the 150

Just wondering if anyone has found an aftermarket wheel in the 17x7.5 size that will fit the 150 Prado correctly. I've only seen mention of the two wheels from Speedy Wheels, but nothing else. Surely there would have to be a few options around? My local tyre dealer doesn't have a clue

We are looking at getting either a VX or a Kakadu and will have 17" wheels fitted pre-delivery. Worst case, I guess we could get Toyota to throw a set of GXL rims on, but that wouldn't really sit right now, would it?

    Cheers,
    Dave.

Thanks Chris, so offset and brake clearances are the same 120 -> 150?

The ROH Trojan is listed as fitting the 120 and is a nice simple looking wheel, might be the one for us.

      Cheers,
      Dave.

I thought I read somewhere that the 120 and 150 use a different wheel offset?

it 5mm Different, its nothing the 150 wheel has +5mm over the 120 series..

          GXL 150 Prado = 17x7.5 ET25 (ET is Offset)
          GXL 120 Prado = 17x7.5 ET30

The GX run a +15 offset on the steel wheels as the wheel is not as wide.

We have tried some aftermarket steel wheels, and they hit on the calipers on the 150, making fitment impossible of 120 Dynamic steels onto the 150.

From previous research when I was buying rims for the camper and wanting only to carry one set of spare wheels, the Dynamic rims hit the calipers on the 120 too

In a legal sense though, if the offset is different, then you wouldn't be able to fit them would you? Or is 5mm within what you would be allowed? I still can't find anything that specifically says it will fit a 150.

                Cheers,

If the offset is different you change a few things:

                  1) If the offset is less, you increase the track of the vehicle, which would place greater stress on the bearings
                  2) if the offset is more, you decrease the track of the vehicle and increase the chance of a rollover. you also risk hittng the brake calipers.

If the insurance company deems that the accident occured due to the wheels being a different spec to what the manufacturer recommends, your claim will be denied.

There was another post some where on here with a quote from a wheel manufacturer (I can't remember which one)
that said that fitting wheels that under track the vehicle is illegal.

If they can prove these were the cause, they may deny the claim, or choose not to pay on that particular item.

If they are notified of the particulars fitted to the vehicle and they are noted on the policy, you should not have a problem.

All insurance companies have a "the insurer will keep the vehicle in a roadworthy condition whilst covered" clause, but as most insured persons arent licenced RWC testers, they can only do to the best of thier ability, and cant be held acountable on technicalities, and there duty is to report any changes, to ensure the insurance company knows, and approves.

The Roadworthy clause is mainly in there to prevent people making a monster truck, or a convertable, or turning the car into a plane whilst covered.

If you were able to explain the GX has a narrower track than your model, with 5mm offset change, and is ok, I doubt they would argue, when your ringing to inform them.

I would prefer to just get rims that are the correct offset from the start, no hassles then. I've sent an email to ROH to see what they have and will probably email a few other wheel companies as well. Surely someone must make a wheel that is the same dimensions as the Toyota originals.

The GX actually has a wider track. But the dimension from outside surface to outside surface of the tyres are the same for GX and the upper models.

It seems that the 120 wheels are fine to fit to the 150, from a legal perspective at least. According to Speedy Wheels, the law states that you can increase the track by up to 25mm (12.5mm per side). Fitting the +25mm offset wheels from a 120 will increase the track by only 10mm total.

Thanks for the replies guys, we will be getting a set of Speedy Avalanche wheels in 17x7.5 fitted pre-delivery along with a set of Mickey T ATZ's and the pre-requisite modified tyre placard.

                              Cheers,
                              Dave.
