  • Bullbar

Hi everyone, I am looking at bullbars and can't decide.
I would probably like the standard ARB but not available anymore.

    Alloy or steel etc...
    thanks Mark

Im very surprised you cant get one from ARB anymore, they still sell 40 series bars.
Alloy or steel depends on what you want. Personly I would not touch anything but steel. Alloy is good if you want "the look" or just to mount ariels and lights. If you want to protect you car from animal strickes, only steel will do.

What money are you looking at for a new TJM one?

      Cheers,

Why would ARB do that, the model remains hugely popular world wide, I think they are losing out on good business by dropping some of these products which are always in demand.

Mate from work just had a Brand new ARB bar fitted this weekon a 90 series, as far as i know its the standard bar on a GXL, so would have flares. I know its not a Sahara as thats what i have and he didn't like it!

Hi Goanna, can you post a full size photo of the front of your car, I would like to see how the Sahara bar looks on your car before I start thinking about it Cheers.

Got a TJM alloy winch bar and I will give you my IMHO pros & cons

                  Pro's
                  Looks great
                  Light,good for IFS
                  GR8 approch angle
Gives the Prado some balls in the looks department

                  Con's
                  Hard to keep looking gr8
Poor mounting for spot lights, got Cibie Turini's and had to make a angle iron frame and mount under main top section to stop the lights from vibrating.
And no protection for the bottom 75mm of the radiator but this is the same for the ARB steel ones .

The reason that I had to get the bar was because I hit a young roo only 900mm with only the plastic bumper. The impact stowed in the condenser and radiators bottom 1/4 and a few oyher things cost RAC $6000.
Was really disappointed that no bullbar supplies any protection to this crucial area. I might have to make something myself

                    Hi
In response to alloy v's steel, a tree sorted the difference out last week. My mate has an 80 series with a wickedly bent alloy bar after an unavoidable slow speed soft impact with a tree during a 4WD trip.... my ARB steel bar looks as good as it ever has after bumping the same tree at the same angle and speed.
He also suffered panel damage from where the alloy bar bent into the bodywork of his old girl.
Alloy - if you want protection, don't go there!

                    Anyway.....

Don't know your budget, but if all the usual places like arb aren't impressing you as an option there are places that will custom build bars and steps for you. I know that "TUFF BARS" in towoombah QLD make bars and side steps/rails that are good quality and i've seen a few getting around on hilux's, etc and one on a 120 series prado (looks awesome). Don't know if they do bars for our breed of vehicle, but if you google them you should be able to get some contact details off their website to find out.
Hope this last bit helps and good luck choosing!

                              winch bars

Rather than start a new thread thought id tack on the end of this one. Im after a new bullbar, steel. What is it that akes a bullbar winch capable/compatible? Can a regular one be converted? Is it just a matter of cutting a hole or a hell of a lot more?

Not sure that i want or need a winch but i figure its easier to get a capable bar now rather than tryng again later. Having trouble finding a steel, or any other bar at Victorian wreckers, so tossing up if i should take what i can get.
