  • DIY Hi-Lift jack winching kit

Hi all, after deciding that winching with a hi-lift would be the best option for me I elected to make up my own kit (vs buying the $180+ genuine Hi-Lift Off Road Kit). I haven't tallied it all up, but I'd say it came in under $100 for the chain, shackles and other metal bits bought from a local lifting/rigging company, and that is for all the chain (the genuine item still requires the purchase of chain).

Some pics attached, have tried it out and the effort is not too bad - a lot more than using an electric winch, but as I tend to avoid trouble it's the right solution for me in terms of cost, weight and versatility.

You must be younger and fitter than I am

The old high lift as a winch works, just its slow and bloody hard work. I will be interested to hear what you think of it after the first time you use it for real, not many people do it more than once

    Cheers Andrew

Looks good mate but I think you are a bit out on your price for the genuine kit - I paid $92 plus postage. I haven't used my kit yet but as Andrew says, if I do it will probably be the first and last time

I have used the tree trunk protector and bow shackles from the kit though

looks pretty good man, but like already stated its blody hard work, winched myself out of a mud hole with a turfer block and then set about modifying by bullbar to accept a winch

Hand winch is still quicker than a highlift! you need to reset the highlift every couple of feet, and you loose a few inches with each reset, still better than walking home!

            Cheers Andrew

yeah yeah... I know it's not much fun to use in ernest!

I did trial 'recover' the car up a hill, biggest worry was that, with noone at the wheel, if something came undone it would head back down the hill rapidly.

But not long after that it got some use in a real situation, the neighbor rolled his tractor and I came across him with his foot (only, thankfully) stuck under it. Was able to winch it back over onto it's wheels, the hardest bit being running from the car with 25kg of steel chain and jack - adrenalin only gets you so far! Very glad I had it on that day.

I am a bit upset that the Hi Lift offroad kit was had for that little, could you tell me where? I looked for it for ages but always twice that price. And you get some flash gloves too.

ps I have a tirfor block but the weight of the block and that heavy roll of cable, not to mention all the bl**dy little spikes in the cable, put me off carting it around.

I got mine from JeepKonection - really good prices on genuine HiLift

                http://www.jeepkonection.com.au/prod...OAD_KIT&cat=14

I have no connection to them but they were really good to deal with.

Thanks for the details, jeez that is cheap for all of their hi-lift range. I suppose shipping would be the killer but still, good prices.

No, shipping was surprisingly cheap (even to WA) and they combine the shipping charge if you order multiple items.

Hello all, long time reader first time poster.

2002tx have you had a chance to try your hi lift out in anger?

I am considering copying your system or upgrading and getting a winch, pretty keen to know your thoughts on the usability of the system.

                      Cheers
