Heading to fraser next week and was wanting something good for recovery. The misses said i can have one but not both so which is the best a pair of sand tracks or maxtrax or a ground anchor to be used with the winch i already have.

Tracker,
I'd go the Maxtrax it's the easiest option
Check out my review and video at http://www.4x4review.com.au/
Maxtrax stack with the least height and are a great Australian product. CraigM on here also makes a heat set of mounts for your roof racks to carry four of them.Black 2009 150 Series D4D GXL Prado, TG150 Transfer Case & Actuator Guard, TJM T13 bar, TJM 9.5lb Winch, Airtec Snorkel, TJM steel sidesteps and sidebars, TJM Underbody Protection, TJM XGS Gold Suspension, Tinted, ARB Fridge Freezer, Couplertec System, Foxwing Awning, 80AH Dual battery, 8" indash GPS, Wet Seat seatcovers, GME TX3540, TX3110 & TX680, Maxtrax, Kaymar Dual Wheel Carrier, Breathers, Federal MT's.

I tried the sandtrax as did another member from SA. IMO and his they failed to recover his vehicle which was the subject of an incoming tied.
Maxtrax are quick to use compared to a winch on sand which will need an anchor point (maybe a buried tyre or hopefully another vehicle)
In the interests of fairness I am an avid MaxTrax supporter and ther are similar products coming onto the market, but I think you will find a strong pattern in the responses.
Goodluck.

Def go the maxtrax, I was over there in Sept and needed them once for myself and helped numerous people who were stuck in front of me blocking our path. Once you use them you will be very thankful for how quick and easy they are to use. The ground anchor would be to heavy and take up too much space, plus would take way more time to bury an unspool the winch cable. In addition on Fraser I doubt you would ever get stuck enough to warrant a winch out, the max trax would do the job 99% of the time!

Hey Tracker, be rest assured that going to Fraser you will not be alone! I'm sure that even these days if you couldn't get out with appropriate tyre pressures and Maxtrax then a good samaratin 4WD owner would be happy to assist.

Howdy Tracker
I personally have never seen "Sand Tracks" so can't comment on them, but have seen many recoveries done with Maxtrax on SA PP trips that I went and brought 2 sets. The thing is, providing you have time and as MLC said you already have said spare tyre which can be burried for recovery from the winch. The next thing that for me that I would never go onto sand without is a long handled shove. A definate must!
Make sure you also let your tyre pressure down to a pressure relivant to the softness of the sand your driving on and have a great time.

I haven't used either method, but if it were me planning for it, I'd go with the track/traction aid products. Simple reason being, your spare tyre is a potential anchor, so why buy another one!glen_ep - engineered, 4" lift, 33" 255/85R16, lockers, 4.88 ratios www.pradopoint.com.au/showthread.php?17237 www.youtube.com/user/glenep www.fb.com/groups/ToyotaPrado90

OK, answering strictly in the terms of your question and ytherefore not promoting anything, having used sand tracks and a winch (but not sand anchor but yes to a tyre and trees), I would say the winch without question. The only thing that may have an effect on this is the type of sand in Qld. If it is similar in its behavour to WA or SA, then i stick by my choice, but in all honesty I just dont know as I have never driven Qld sand. (seriously, sand varies between states and sometimes within states)

I don't sell a product rather report on the actual effectiveness of a product, we have used winches, performed snatch recoveries but truely the easiest and quickest method of recovery in the sand is with a product like Maxtrax. I have had the opportunity to try out the Maxtrax on Fraser Island, Teewah Beach, Moreton Island, Bribie Beach and also Stradbroke Island. The video on my website shows the Prado and Patrol easily walk out of some reasonable sand bogs. We actually dug them in so they were more extreme than you normally would get. Everytime it was as simple as using the Maxtrxc to dig away done sand, place the Maxtrax and drive out.Black 2009 150 Series D4D GXL Prado, TG150 Transfer Case & Actuator Guard, TJM T13 bar, TJM 9.5lb Winch, Airtec Snorkel, TJM steel sidesteps and sidebars, TJM Underbody Protection, TJM XGS Gold Suspension, Tinted, ARB Fridge Freezer, Couplertec System, Foxwing Awning, 80AH Dual battery, 8" indash GPS, Wet Seat seatcovers, GME TX3540, TX3110 & TX680, Maxtrax, Kaymar Dual Wheel Carrier, Breathers, Federal MT's.

Maxtrax ( or the similar products ) are the go. I'm not sure how many of you have used a ground anchor? But I've found in very soft sand they tend to dig right in and be dragged toward the car. Further the 'line of pull' tends to be very steep, i.e. you find you winch line sort of pulling on a very steep downwards angle, not really what you want with a rising tide! A has been mentioned, the sand anchor tends to be heavy, and bulky. So don't get me wrong, if you a stuck on your own and have a only a sand anchor, you will get out and be very thankful for it! However, maxtrax tend to be easier to use and store.
Just my thoughts.
