    Hi

I'm gearing up to go to the Kimberly and get my first taste of long over due 4wd camping after years of ho hum 2wd camping

The standard bar on my 97 gxl is great for holding a pair of spotties up but it aint equipped to take / handle a winch. A new bar and winch equals about 3500 - 4000k. After setting aside cash for the mortgage for two months and then two months camping / traveling cost the winch and bar will have to wait. For the time being I will have to run a full recovery kit.

I have three questions for the experienced prado point panel

1 Does a hand winch have any practical value / use?

2 Is it worth carrying chain for anything or is a variety of snatch straps generally got most things covered?

3 The "Aussie bush winch" devices that fit on to wheel rims with high tension / stress rope that is attached to a tree and you "drive yourself out using the wheel and motor as your winch. I saw this in a mag , seemed like a good idea but I haunt seen to much hoo har going on about it. Wondered if it had any merits?

    thanks for any comments

    I've used a hi-lift jack for a self-recovery about a week ago. I had:
    -hi-lift jack
-snatch strap, doubled over (stronger and less stretch)
    -3m chain
    - shackles

It's fairly hard work, but I don't need to do it very often and the hi-lift is useful for other jobs.

      Thankyou

Pradogxlv6 - your 3 cents has made me richer and I'm veering away from the bush winch as I type

trojan - I'll get a full recov. kit and will look closely at the hand winch now (might even find it useful on the building site)

& Carrot - well, everyone luves a blood nut ( but they don't win finals)

      thanks v much
