  • Roof top tent & Prado roof weight rating

    Hi,

I've read that the weight rating on the Prado roof is 100kgs max. Can anyone advise if they're running roof top tents on their Prado? If so, are you sleeping two people in the tent and can you offer any advice re your roof rack setup to support people sleeping in the tent?

Any pics etc would be great.

Additionally any feedback on your particular tent and how you've found it would be appreciated too

    Cheers,
    Boz

trojan is right, the rating is also at 100km/h ie the amount of for the load puts on the roof at speed, so when static with a tent, rack and 2 people up there it could be up 2 200kg
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

I run a rooftop, but mine is only an aluminium based, ripstop nylon one, comes in under 60kg, so not sure how the big canvas ones like ARB's that weigh about 95kg would go, but I have no issues with mine.

Wow, i never knew that!! I had never really considered a roof top tent or looked into it, but it did seem odd that a roof rack could only take 100kg yet you can put a 2 person tent up there.

Think about it... the roof design must be strong enough to protect the occupants and support the entire weight of the vehicle in the event that the vehicle ends upside-down.

Re: Roof top tent & Prado roof weight rating

                Hi.

I bought a rooftop tent of eBay late last year. $800. made in South Africa. Have compared it to the Open Sky (Quoted $2000+ ) and I believe it was made in the same factory, it is identical! Originally had 2 x Rhino H/Duty racks. I weigh 100kg and my missus is 60kg. Was not really sturdy enough do I added another bar. Solid as now!

BE WARNED THESE THINGS ACT AS A GIANT AIRBRAKE! I now have a cast iron excuse for the TRD supercharger, as the top speed loaded on bitumen is 110km foot to the floor! I have made a winch and cradle to lift the tent off and hang it in my carport. Can post pics if needed.

Re: Roof top tent & Prado roof weight rating

Yeh I'v got an Eezi-awn roof toper on a set of heavy duty Pro Racks on my 90,not a problem at all. The tent would weigh about 90 kg, it is a pretty heavy canvas but verry strong. My wife and i have slept through some pretty nasty storms and never once been wet or blown around in it.I also like to drive some pretty rough places and have had no issues with the weight up there. As for wind drag,I had a airofoil made up on a seperat rack which can be adjusted for the best resolts, the v6 still gets 14lt-100klm loaded up.I'v had this set up on the Prado for a couple of years, and the tent much longer on the old rig.We use it a lot.

Hi Teza h, can you give us some more details on that aerofoil, is that custom made, or off the shelf?
We're about to buy a rooftop tent and are still very unsure what to get. I don't want to spend too much but I don't want to buy twice.

Also, on my 120 V6, I only have the 3 sports bars, is this good enough to fix the tent to?

Wish I could do that, lol. Mine doesn't fit under the carport with the tent on, I always have to rope in a volunteer to get mine on and off. 60kg doesn't sound much but it's a challenge when it's over your head and has to be dead straight to avoid scratching the roof or ripping off the plastic covers on the gutters

Try this link. The guy was great to deal with, and you can buy four times, and not come close to the price of a "name" brand tent.

I have compared a genuine Open Sky tent, and am convinced they are the same product!

Hi Boomslang, The airfoil was mad up by a sheet metal guy , it's made of half mm aluminium, bent to shape and rivited together, then fixed to a modifide roof rack.Cant give you a prise on it as my dad had it made up for towing his caravan many years ago,but it dose work realy well.If you wont some better pics of it let me know and I'l post some up.
