  • Reversing Light Bracket?

    Hi guys,

I've upgraded from a 2nd gen surf to a 95s v6 gxl (good move!) and have a couple of left over accessories to fit to the new beast.

The trickiest decision at the moment is the reversing light. I have an IPF Super Off Roader 55w work/reversing lamp which needs a new home on the back of the prado. On the surf, I had it on a light bracket attached to my Rhino bars. Ideally I would like it a little lower, but not underneath the car, where I will smash it to pieces

Long story short, I have seen some nice pics of 95s with their back up lamps mounted above and behind the spare on a bracket (which I presume mounts up between the wheel holder and the rear door?).

Just wondering if any of you guys have / know of these? Are these home made, or are they commercially available - if so, where?

    Cheers in advance!

    Jam.

Would also be keen to hear from anyone that has a rear workl/camp light install 8)

I have an IPF worklight to install somewhere, but after looking at the amount of room behind the spare am wondering if spacing it out far enough to get a bracket behind is really a good idea or not.

Heres the bracket on my 90. Homemade, it was on the car when I bought it.

Trying to post the pics, but I get an error msg It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image.

Hey VL400, did you sort out the bracket in the end? I think I'll take the easy way out and put the 816 light on Rhino Bars, just have to figure out where to put the wiring now :?

          Re: Reversing Light Bracket?

planning on making one next week. i'm sick of not being able to see whats behind me. got some 1" square tube, a work light and my mates welder. will let you guys know how it goes. could even supply dimensions/pics when i'm done.
i'm going to mount it behind spare, using factory mounting holes and longer bolts. Don't ask me about wiring yet, i have know idea how i'm going to do it.

                Re: Reversing Light Bracket?

Starting doing the wiring for a rear light the last couple..of weeks! Came up with an idea to run the cable without drilling through the door cause that is scary and another place for water and rust to cause problems.... I have drilled a hole in the centre of the bolt mounting the spare wheel carrier. I purchased another bolt so if i stuffed up it wasn't disastrous. I mounted the bolt in the lower drivers side of the mount and ran the cable through the door and the bolt... pretty neat.

Figured its about time I gave something useful and i haven't seen it done before. Can't find the thread on the rear light which I could before either (can anyone else? was it samo's light i can remember?)and I took some pictures which would save all these words but it's telling me ..gotta read about posting photos... ok test run

Don't be fooled by this photo it can be quite a tricky task to try and get the cable through the inside of the door, perfect job to get the little tackers to help you with and something thinner than a coat hanger single core steel wire seemed to do the trick..

                  Re: Reversing Light Bracket?

Hey LukeD, I missed this before so I'm glad it's popped up again - absolutely love the install. How big a hole is it running through that bolt? Mine are high tensile, I assume I'd have to change that to easily drill one out. I plan on doing it for a reversing camera install. I've been given a very nice camera which will sit perfectly behind the spare wheel and the lens will poke out through the middle of the bracket. That will be for looking over the camper when trying to reverse that in the bush at night. Planning to mount a wider angle one lower down for general reversing.

                    Re: Reversing Light Bracket?

                    Gday Mr Pig,

Yea was hoping someone would make use of the photos. The cable I have run is my bro's household 1.5 or 2.5mm2 cable which is excessively large and goes all the way to engine bay. The hole i drilled is just large enough to fit the cable.. which is quite large. Can measure tomorrow. The bolt is only mild steel but considering I think a 6mm bolt can take 1 tonne of tensile loading I wasnt too worried. I havent tested it on a rough road yet.. keeping the original bolt in glove box just in case but pretty confident.

If your concerned options are either or:-

Run the last segment of cable in a smaller diameter, camera wouldn't pull as many amps as 55W light
Use your high tensile bolt but use a cobalt drill piece, I have successfully done this before.

Other thing which someone may suggest is that the cable doesnt have much protection to being cut on the edge of bolt but still better that going through thin sheet of steel as bolt is quite long.

Glad to help someone out, good luck
