  • Component speaker placement

    Hi,

    I am upgrading my door speakers and have chosen a set of component speakers for the front doors. I have installed the woofers, but am torn as to the best place to install the tweeters. The obvious place aesthetacally, is in the top of the door trim (counter-sunk) near where it butts up to the dash when the door is closed. Alternative places are on the A-pillar and on the dash. I don't think either of those places would be too attractive, and I'm not sure if the sound would be very good.

    Can I get some suggestions and preferably photos, of where people have put theirs, and feedback on the accoustic effect (I know the Prado cabin isn't great for accoustics).

    Any help would be greatly appreciated before I get the hole saw out and start hacking or drilling.

    cheers,
    David

      So then Birdman, what did you end up doing?

      I am getting ready to replace my co-axials with a component setup. I was thinking about putting my holesaw through my sail-panels and epoxying a peice of pvc pipe cut at an angle to aim my tweeters at my head. Did you mount yours in the sail-panels or a-pillars or did you give up and by pods that glue to the dash? Also, where did you mount your crossovers?

        Hey,

        I ended up mounting them on the dash. I have a dash-mat that I have cable-tied to the windscreen vents to stop it moving around. The tweeters came with small angular mounting pods, which enabled me to fix them to the mat, in the far front corners under the windscreen. I get a reasonable sound reflection off the screen. The cross-overs were a bit harder. On the passenger side, I mounted above glove-box, and on drivers side, I mounted on plastic air-duct running under steering column.

        All up, I'm happy with the setup.

          Re: Component speaker placement

          I finally installed my 2-way components. I put the 6,5" woofer in the stock location in the door, but I put in some sound dampening mats to reduce vibrations and to seal the inner doorskin.

          The crossovers fit between the speakergrill and the pocket on the doorpanel.

          I found a great way to mount the tweeters to the A-pillar. It involves PVC endcaps and a threaded pipe (The kind used in lamps.) Here is a DIY tutorial for the tweeter mounts: http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/...eter-pods.html

            Hi there,

            another idea is the factory option on later 90 series; either sides of the dash;

            here's mine (2000 grande)

            Goldmember, a Prado Grande 2000 model, because people out there have been turning music into gold. A mobile soundstage currently under construction utilizing old school multi-channel active system design. All to have an Amsterdam good time.
