GME TX3420 installation

I have just purchased the TX3420. The detachable head will fit perfectly under the ash tray, but I was wondering where is the best place for the CB's main body. I was thinking of putting it in the passangers kick panel (if it will fit) and then put in an extension speaker (not sure where to put that either). I'm sure I'll work it out in the long run , but some of you blokes have already had a go.

Thanks Switched but I was still wondering if the main unit will fit behind the passangers kick panel. Anyway if not the info you gave me will help no matter what I decide to do. If anybody else has other ideas I'm willing listen.

G'Day Kimbo,

I have been meaning to post pics on here of my GME 3440 install for a while but time got away from me. I may have to have it out to do other wiring tomorrow so will take some pics then.

I installed mine in between the centre console and the cup holders. There is a gap that it the exact size for a 3440 unit and I believe your unit is the same size.

The inset that has the cup holders is relatively easy to get out. I have double sided taped, and pop-riveted the mounting bracket to the rear of the plastic cup holders, between the cup holders and the centre console. I padded the centre console side with another strip of (wrapped) double sided tape. I also put a couple of strips and it on what would have been the front of the unit (or where the head would go if it had one) between the unit and the transmission tunnel for support. The rear of the unit points up and the power, aerial cable and external speaker are feed from the top.

There was a bit of a twist in getting it back in with the aerial cable getting back under the lip of the centre console, but nothing too bad.

I originally did not have an external aerial at all and I found this to be okay. The speaker of the unit (rear/bottom) faces forwards and there is only the mounting bracket and the plastic between the unit and yourself but some passengers complained about not being able to hear it, especially something was in the cup holders.

I hope this makes sense. I will get to the photos so it will be clearer.

This unit has a detacheable head which will fit under the ash tray area.
The main unit I can put anywhere as long as I have an external speaker -
thats what I'm hoping to do .

My ´97 Prado has a mounting spot for a speaker under the steering wheel. I am going to put a 5.25" speaker for my VHF there someday.

You should be able to see a bunch of small holes arranged in a circle by your knee when you´re in the drivers seat. The backside looks like a place for a speaker, maybe a factory option handsfree device?

hi kimbo,

I have a detached face uniden uh015sx and I mounted the faceplate in the same spot you are talking about for yours.

for the main unit I fitted it between the centre console and the gear shifter under the gearbox tunnel cover (see the pics).
theres plenty of room under there and I mounted it so the speaker faces up and the sound is loud and clear. it is close to the power supply from the 12V socket and close to run the cable to the face plate.

Don't know if there'd be as much room in an auto but it's still worth a look. if yours is a manual then you shouldn't have any problem.

Mine fitted underneath the console itself. 3 or four bolts, unzip the handbrake boot, and out she comes! Plenty of room, (no bracket - cable tied down) has been there for 9 years no problems.

If by kick panel you are refering to the panel to the right of the passagers feet where the air duct comes out then No it will not fit behind as there is not enough space directly behind it but what others have done and I followed was to attach a piece of sheet steel to this with a few screw and then mount the base unit off of this. This also provides elevation so that if you drown your vehcile the UHF has a better chance of surviving.

The rear view of the home made mounting bracket and the panel with the base unit looks like:


Then when this is installed in place the base unit sits up just above the height of the drivers left foot rest. This could easily be done on the passanger side provided it does not foul with airconditioning ducts. I'll let you find that out for yourself:


There is no chance of kicking this unless your foot is about two foot long
