Hi
Thought I's share this idea that's been serving us well for a few years now. For reasons you'll find obvious later we call it "The Bar" because of it's perfect height for mixing of (ahem) beverages.
First step, we went to Clark Rubber and got hold of some of their excellent checkerplate look rubber mat. It's shaped to be a bit oversize so it goes up at the edges and right to the end of the door seal. Brilliant of something spills or get a load of sand or dirt on stuff.
Then I made this box that fitted snugly in the cargo area, It's made from bits of timber I had lying around.
Basically to get the balance between strength and weight right I've used different sizes. The sides are substantially thicker than the other pieces and the bracing comes from that.
I put heavy stuff in the bottom, light stuff like soft bags, sleeping bags, pillows etc on top. You do have the option of bolting it down to the floor as long as you're attaching to the solid sides.
I found this big plastic tub at Bunnings that fits very nicely in the bottom compartment and it has many uses, while en route it holds the heavier stuff (like a week's worth of food) and when at the campsite 2 people can just slide it out and it goes in the tent. While travelling I have a hole in the top of the bench that goes through and secures the tub so it can't slide back, not from the awesome accelleration of a V6 engine, HAH! but when pulling up very steep bumpy grades.
A really useful thing about this tub, when beach fishing all the bait, crap and general stuff like a huge haul of fish goes in the tub, not on the floor, and if anything spills inside the tub it's not a disaster. Similarly, when I go to re-fill the water containers I can fit 3 or 4 20 litre jerrys in there nice and snug. I also carry a 4m food grade hose with tap attachments so I'm not lugging them in and out at the water stops. Unbelievably good way to do it, your back will love you! (the kids also use it as a canoe at waterholes) so versatile!
So When we' re at camp. the bar comes out and I put legs under it, they are adjustable for uneven ground, and viola!
