  • General Winch Advice?

My recently bought 90 series unfortunately has an alloy bar and thus, can't take a winch. Obviously replaing the bar with a winch bar would be the perfect option. Other than going to that sort of expense early on though, with the minister for finance keeping a keen eye on things. I'm after some advice regarding alternate options.

    Hand winch?

Electric winch? Is it possible to use one of these?

    Anything else?

hand winch would probably be the way to go, they r cheaper around $400 for a decent , they keep you fit but the only downside is they take up a bit of room in the back but it allows you to be self sufficent. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Keep in mind hand winches are a hell of a lot of work and realistically you'd never want to have to winch more than a couple of metres.

Best bet would be to save up for the winch bar and winch. Ironman do good cheaper combo's (Usually bar/winch and they throw in free lights) and they're winches are actually quite highly rated.

As for when you say an electric winch, I presume you mean a winch in the style of a hand winch, but electronically powered? Not sure if these exist, but would be a good idea!

If you want to look at the Ironman bar and winch just look in my rig thread as shown in my sig. Off memory it's about $2000 +fitting

IMO look into a hand winch and associated stuff if funds are tight as the straps and other gear you get to use your hand winch will transfer to your mounted winch when the time comes. In reality the only time you'd be in any rush to recover your stuck car is when it can sink and be destroyed (like when the tide is coming in and your stuck below the high tide mark) so a hand winch is fine for 99% of recoveries and it can be used to pull you backwards.

you could also look into something like this and get a front tow bar made up and installed behind/under the alloy bullbar. It'd still take up space in the back when not in use tho.

Is there not a gap where you can come through like this?
These winch boxes are very solid and give great frontal protection too. Bolts onto the front chassis rail.

KZJ90 front and rear winches, Safari Snorkel, 40mm OME lift, 40mm Body lift, BFG MT, 1000w Inverter, 0n-board air, drawer system, X-Lites, triple battery, triple lockers, steel bumpers, custom sliders, rack off an old van.
