  • Rear door fold down table

Has anyone done a fold down table on the inside of the rear cargo area door?
I am thinkin of removing the trim panel and cutting out a flat ali sheet the same size then hinging the lot to swing down as a camping style table. Preferably then attaching the original trim to keep it all looking sweet.

    Any ideas/photos would be cool.

    Cheers
    Chris.

Get some photos up Chriso, I have seen what you have done and you have re-set the standard I think!

Re: Rear door fold down table

Thanks for the word up Duff.

1st time posting pics so I hope they work...!

As I stated in the original post I wanted it to be concealed behind the original door trim.

The steps I went through to complete the job as follows:
Remove the door trim and (carefully) peel off the vinyl and remove the rivets etc holding the pocket/net on.
Use the thin backboard as a template to make a copy out of 10mm ply - to be used for the table.
Once the ply was confirmed to fit the door wrap and staple the vinyl onto the ply. Just a thicker door panel essentially..
Reattach the net/pocket from the back using screws (bit of creative thinking req'd here).
On the backside of the new door panel/table glued some auto style carpet (Bunnings @ $30 1mx2m).
Glued some more carpet to the old thin door panel and simply clipped it back onto the door.
2 x $5 hinges screwed into the door and the table.
Bought an $8 tie down strap from Buninngs again and cut it up for the straps to hold table up. Screwed the top underneath the upper plastic trim for the stealth look.
I used some brass spring loaded ball bearing catches so I could hide them discreetly as opposed to the normal elastic tie downs everyone else uses. These work fine and as my table closes against the drawers in the cargo area I do not have problems with the table falling down over bumps.
Finished it off with a LED trailer number plate light which is hooked into the rear cargo light and works fantastically!

The boss loves it cos she can now sort the kids lunches etc with minimal fuss.

Cost me about $60 all up (i pinched the ply of a mate)and a couple of afternoons. (+ several coldies)

          Chriso.

i'd say you have got the stealth look for the whole table.

                Chris,

Fantastic looking table. Can't wait to start on my own.

Just wondering how you now access the rear windscreen washer reservoir?

Re: Rear door fold down table

Thanks for the kind words dudes!

Wolfcub, Re the rear washer bottle. To be honest mate I think I have used the washer 3-4 times in the 5 years I have had the big girl and half of those were probably by accident! I filled the bottle up before I put the panel back on. Would be a 5 min job to unclip the trim and gently fill it with a hose when required. Alternatively a small access panel could be made with a stanley knife through the carpet, maybe with some velcro to hold it closed I guess.

P.S. before someone else asks, YES the rear door inner handle now no longer works as it obviously folds down with the table. I had to gently grind the back of it away with a flapper disc on my 5" grinder and then simply super glued it to the outside. Would advise sorting another way to open the door if you have a cargo barrier or an embarrassing situation could occur... :? Let alone a junior PP'er getting stuck in there. I have no cargo barrier so its cool for the moment.

                  Chriso.

Awesome mate! Might do the same thing with mine, got no handle on mine so no issue anyway.

                    very original thinking
