  • Prado rattles help please!

My 2001 RV TD auto has developed three rattles.

One is the the standard 90 series dash rattle. I had the dash fix link on my previous computer which got stolen. Can someone post a link to the document or post it as an attachment, please as I am about to try try to fix it.

The second rattle is the passenger grab handle on the dash which has come loose. I am presuming I will be able to access the screws/bolts when fixing the dash.

The third rattle is coming from the rear of the vehicle. It occurs when I go over a sharp bump and it sounds like it could be the rear door vibrating on latch. The rattle occurs both when I am towing and when I am not. Nothing is obviously loose when I check when my Prado is stationary.

I will appreciate any assistance so I can have a quieter Prado.

I too have a rattle somewhere in the dash or front passenger door of my 2002 VX. I have woodgrain panelling where the grab handle would be so I know it can't be that. I also get a rattle at the rear when going over large bumps or the ridiculous speed humps common to my local area; I've always figured it was the muffler or exhaust bouncing on it's brackets.

Have a look at the metal bar latch on the back pillar,I had the same rattle, and on checking, the 2 retaining screws had come loose.

Tow bar tongue, is the cause of the rattle in the back when you go over a speed hump, Happens in mine, but when I remove the tongue, the noise also dissappears.

I have stopped the rear rattle. It turned out to be the number plate fitting rattling because the clips had come loose. I have for now jammed a rubber grommet between the fitting and the rear door and behold the rattle has stopped. I am not sure how long the rubber grommet will do the job.

I have a tow bar but don't keep the tongue installed. I know the number plate rattles when I close the rear door so will look at the bolts again.

Heres a bit of info from another forum (Yahoo?) I saved some time ago re the dash fix. I've done it to mine, it works well and ends the movement and shaking. I had to make up my own brackets and did both the passenger and drivers side. The passenger side took the longest as it was the first side I did, the drivers side took half the time. Its a relatively easy fix.

The reason the dash rattles mainly on passenger side is due to the two reinforcement nuts on the driver side. (It attaches the dash to the dash cross bar)
Replacing the broken clips would be a waste of time, it will keep on snapping.

Got the triangle shaped bracket (perfect size, galvanized, construction bracket)
Marked and drilled the left side of dash, unscrewed one of the dash cross bar’s nuts and installed bracket.
No other drilling required, It works perfectly, for now

I have a copy of this original fix document from the Yahoo 90 Series group. The photos above are from that document and there is a little more info included. I can't attach the file to this post as it is too big but if anyone wants a copy then send me a PM with your email and I'll send it on.

                Cheers

Yeah, thats why I only included the bit that I did. I guess there's probably some way of posting a large document like this (1.4mb) but its beyond my capabilities.

I had a brainwave when I saw archives on the home page. So I clicked on it did a search for Prado Dash Fix and behold I found the the thread and the post with the document. I have saved the document and also printed it out.

The next thing is fixing the dash. However my mechanical skills are limited things like putting in fuel, checking oil and tyres and changing tyres. I am willing to give it a go by I don't know where to start. Any assistance/guidance would be appreciated, suitable reward for help provided can be arranged.

My hacienda is in Marangaroo in Perth.

If anyone is wondering what this sounds like have a look here. This is Cape York earlier this year without the fix.

Can you do a similar vid with everything in the glove box , centre console, rear cargo area, and ashtray removed, as that vid you show sounds metalic, also if you can, get someone in the passenger seat and see if they can trace the rattle to a particular location.

                              WOz,

That sounds like the standard "no cost option" dash rattle with a couple of extras from loose items in the glove box, center console etc.
