    Backdoor / tailgate, squeaking

my 90 series I get a horrible squeaking noise when I take it off road, I’m thinking it’s not for the suspension as I can’t make it happen, no matter how hard I bounce. Haha. But anyone had this problem? And fixed it?

Or anyone had this problem at all???

    Cheers

years ago when i was on the floor we would get things like this. and this is how we'd fix it. same as squeaky door seals.
if it is the tailgate seal.
open the tailgate and thoughly wash the tailgate area and the door.
(like you would if you were washing your truck, just with a little more care not to drip water in car)
give the door seal a really good wash with soapy water.
dry everything off with towel or something.
check seal for grit or foreign debre, and clean/scuff off if needed.
check body where the sealing takes place and check for grit.
we would then use a vasoline like grease (but thinner), holden actually used to sell this seal grease for this purpose (obviously typical holden fixes). it is a clear/opague very thin substance (it's not really what i would can grease but that consistancy).
then you smear a very light film of this, over the sealing surface/body.
(not the seal as the door moves slightly whilst driving)
open and close the door a few times. you'll see where the seal touches.
wipe off excess, that is further than say 3mm from seal marks (to allow for movement), and your done. easier to do than type it, and it works.
just don't put too much on as it will like any damp/wet surface, tract dirt/dust.
make sure to include lubricating the door sliders/locators (very important)

      cheers

thanks mate, i'll give it ago, but my back door seal is pretty average cause we used to use it as a work truck, so the seal might need to be replaced, but sweet thanks man. i'll let you know.

Happens all the time in mine ... and I hate squeaks

I haven't managed to fix it yet but I've had the back door lock adjusted last time I got the service done and it reduced it a little bit.
I've noticed there is a bit of wear on the door strike which would tell me the back door has sagged a little... maybe it's the lock rubbing on the door strike??
        Cheers, Leon

I used 3 washers (one on each bolt) to space the bottom hinge slightly away from the body to eliminate the hinge sag and then adjusted the top hinge acordingly. No more rattle/clunk from the rear door.

Hey guys, im having the same problem. I didnt have it on my 95, which was armored and have a really heavy tailgate, but have it on my 90, which is not armored and is 6 years newer.

It happens when i go over bumps, potholes and such and is especially noticeable when going downhill. At first I thought it was a problem with the rear seats, then after asking a friend of mine to drive while I sat in the rear seat inspecting, I realized it was the tailgate.

So anyway, after reading a bit I cant quite figure out the solution for this. Can anyone post step by step instructions to solving this?? I HATE squeaks!!

Silicone spray fixes squeaks at door seals.
Just spray it on being carefull not to overspray
You can spray a rag and apply but direct works best.
Obviously keeping them clean helps but re lube after you clean.

I did the silicone spray and the squeaking stopped but there's still a rattle. How can I tell if its the rear door that needs adjusting?? If so, how do I adjust it??

Thank you so much for your reply!!

                Cheers,

                Luis

I know this is an old thread and so are the other few that cover this topic.
Thankyou to the person who posted some time ago recommending duct tape be placed on the catch bolted to the body where the door latch locks onto....
I too had a squeeking problem and last moth i'd had enough!....so i looked and looked and prodded and shook the truck but nothing squeeked...so as a last resort i placed duct tape around the latch....well bugger me if it didnt work!

No squeek for 20c worth of duct tape!
Thankyou who ever recommended this...because it works.

I want to thank the poster for the suggestion of the washers on the bottom hinge, it worked great for me too. I didnt even need to adjust the top hinge, I put two washers about 2mm thick on the door side not the car side and it was a perfect amount of lift to align the door with the latch and holding bracket on the other side when closed. I did do a little more hammering of the bracket to close it off a little more and get it sweetly snug but not sure if it was 100% needed. I did tighten the two bolts on the bracket too which I am sure helped.

I think if I was more pedantic I would have used a 2mm plate that spanned from one bolt hole to the other to get more surface area under the hinge, but I got better things to do. Maybe if she sags again in 10 years time I will bother (I doubt it though)....cheers

I replaced both of the hinges.
Does anyone know if they are identical or if come on a top/bottom pair?

Can't align the door. Still sags a little and the hinges have no play.

I'm pretty sure they are the same I replaced mine a few years ago they are a bit of a bugger to align and your door may have even twisted a little.
