    SUB TANK

    HELLO, GREAT TO JOIN YOUR COMMUNITY, HAVE OWNED A 90 FOR SIX MONTHS, (3.4 V6) LOVED BUT TWO THINGS I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT?

    #1 IT SEEMS AS IF MY SUB TANK LEVEL IS GROWING DRAMATICALLY DURING THE COURSE OF AROUND TOWN DRIVING THROUGH THE WEEK, AND MY MAIN SEEMS TO SHRINK QUICKLY. IS THIS NORMAL?


    #2 I SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY HEATER, IT TAKES A LONG TIME FOR HEATER CORE TO WARM UP AFTER TURNING DIAL TO HOT. PLEASE HELP?

    Hi Johnson,

    not sure if the tanks are connected, I know mine arn't and not sure where your problem is there. Maybe you have a heavy right foot for the main and found the Eco. pedal for the sub, a bit of a mystery there.

    As for the heater, I would assume that your heater hoses have a blockage of some sort and a good clean out of the entire cooling system would be needed. Another cause could be that the valve that turns on the cooling system to your core is not functioning properly, this is more likely the problem as you would likely to be having cooling (overheating) dramas when the weather gets hot.

      It's normal for your subtank level to rise, as unused fuel is pumped back into the sub. This also means you'll be forced to use the subtank (even if you dont fill it manually) maintaining the quality of the rubber seals and pumps.

        Hi and welcome to PP,

        Assuming you have a petrol engine it is normal for some fuel to bleed off to the sub tank while using the main tank but it should not be "dramatic"

        My system only tranfers a 5 or so litres per tank. What might be happening is the fuel return is not switching when you switch from main to sub and vice versa.
        On a recent trip to the cape a Prado travelling with us had this happen.

        His sub tank was not receiving any return when using it, it was filling the main to the point it was pressurising the carbon canister with raw fuel which in turn drained out through the chassis rail under the car..... rather disconcerting to be leaving a trail of fuel :shock:

        What was happening was his supply valves were switching but not the return valves so all excess fuel was pumped to the main continually. Your discription sounds like you have the same issue but with the return fuel all going to the sub tank. The valves are under the passenger side between the chassis rail and driveline.

          mine does the same i read up on it and it does transfer feul from main while using sub to keep pumps and associated parts lubricated

            Never too late...

            I was hoping to change fuel types a few week ago. Wanted to go from Shell to Caltex.
            I ran down the main tank and filled to Caltex fuel and the sub tank had Shell.

            So here's what happended.
            Main tank full of Caltex, so I started to use the sub tank, it got down to 1/4. Beaut, nearly ready for a fill up with Caltex.
            Next time I started the Prado, I noticed the sub tank went from 1/4 to just over 1/2 tank and the main tank went from being full to less the 3/4's

            SO TO ANSWER THE QUESTION and the book also quotes.
            Fuel does transferred between tanks and it does it when it wants too, simple as that.

            It's a good thing.

              Your car must've been parked on some kind of slope I'm thinking. I've noticed on bouncy tracks I've lost heaps of fuel from the main to the sub. When I've parked my car on flat ground I've never lost fuel from one tank to the other that I'm aware of. Interesting though.

                Every time you turn the key to start it it will transfer fuel from the main the reserve...... there is a fair bit here already
