  • Gas Bonnet Struts

Bit fed up with the bonnet stick thingo and want to fit a couple of gas struts. Toyota don't have a kit so I'll have to source my own.

Has anyone fitted them to a 95 Series and are there any convenient places to attach them on the body and bonnet that don't require drilling holes, etc.

    Hi Wizard.

Did you sort your gas struts in the end? I would love to do the same mod.

      Black Dog,

given up for the time being. Had other things to fix

Had to get the front bash plates replaced as they were rusted through with a Brown Davis plate

Recondition the steering rack and new lower control arm bushes.

Not bad after 7 year and 190,000 km !

If you figure something out, let me know! I was thinking exactly the same thing the other day. Couldn't be too hard though, I've seen conversions done on commodores, you'd just need to figure out the right spot to put them.

          Re: Gas Bonnet Struts

I did think that perhaps one of our 120 friends could tell us the measurements (locations) of the mounts on their bonnet/wings.

Sureley it would be as simple as buying two struts from Toyota and drilling/tapping some mounts in?

          What are your thoughts?

            Re: Gas Bonnet Struts

Only thing I was thinking is if there's actually enough room where the struts would go. I haven't looked but there's the possibility of the struts fouling on the bonnet when its shut.

I was going to add gas struts... but then the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle kicked in and I decided not to... It's just another thing to go wrong.

But I'd love to see a pic of someone that has done it

I'd like to do the opposite with my 120! the gas struts need replacing and toyota want over $400 to fit them. Would love the simplicity of the rigid bonnet stay

You should be able to get aftermarket replacements and if not get your existing ones regassed. Google is your friend in this regard.

At $245 per bonnet strut from toyota for a 120 bonnet strut i would stay with the black stick anyday. cheers samo

don't waste the money on toyota, I've seen gassing for less than $50 a pair. Maybe even ask a panel beater in the area, they might know someone.

as for the hole positins the best and easiest way to work it out would be put the bonnet up with the stick, let the struts out ot max length then mark 2 mounting hole from that, but angle the strut, the compress the strut to just above minimum length and then mark on the exterior pannels on the bonnet when the mounting hole you just marked it, and the on the body at the strut minimum length, aslong as when you close the bonnet the body mark is behind the bonnet mark the the mounting point marked will work. but get them as close as possible but still about 10-15mm behind the bonnet mark.

If i do this mod which is quite likely then ill do a write up. but i tried to make it as clear as i can in this post.

I used to buy aftermarket gas struts from a company on eBay called "Gas Strut Guys". They were brilliant to deal with and only about $30 a pair (Rear door of 60 series cruiser)
