Scrivets

Hi all. My Prado has a number of plastic fasteners, called Scrivets. They attach plastic panels to bodywork (bumper to body; splash guards to wheel arches, etc). But they don't allow you to undo them. They simply break into bits when you apply a screwdriver or a pair of pliers to them. Will SOMEBODY please tell me how to 'undo' a scrivet, and whether they are suposed to be reusable, or replaced each time with a new scrivet from Toyota

Hmmm... haven't removed any scrivets yet but I will need to soon as want to see if my FIL can make a steel rear bar for me. Be interested to see what people have to say.

I think the inner guards in the front wheel arches are held on with less substantial clips and I replaced them with 'x-mas tree' clips from Super Cheap Auto.

Thanks, Snaga. I Hadn't heard of x-mas trees, and now I've bought some, thanks to you, and used them to replace the nackered scrivets. Mind you, at a price of $1.13 each from Repco, it makes for expensive repiars, not to mention that fact that I'm sure you need them just when you are out of stock (and, at that price, you wouldn't want to have too many in stock, eh?

Yep, they're not cheap
When I had my last service done they had ripped all the clips from the left front guard and then it was getting caught in the suspension springs... subtly suggested they might want to leave it how they found and when I came to collect it all were replaced
