I went to replace the "towing hook" with a set of rated hooks however the bolt diameter of the commercial rated recovery hooks are to large to screw into the original threaded piece in the chassis. Using the "original" bolts results in a sloppy fit between hook holes and bolts. Can anyone advise whether this will greatly effect rating or any alternate suggestions/ Thanks

Re: Recovery Point Front
Shock forces under load as the recovery point moves during a snatch can stress the bolts. While the first or second snatch may not be affected - it will shear the bolts one day and may cause severe injury to the occupants of the towing vehicle, bystanders or others. Make sure that you install your recovery points to the manufacturers specifications - using correctly sized and rated bolts, do not rely on the standard undersized (and possibly not of correct tensile strength) bolts from the original.
Have you tried the search, there are already many threads on the various recovery points available for the 90s and 120s, along with loads of images on how they fellas have installed them.
Here is one example out of many - recovery points.2014 D4D 150 GXL Automatic - CHARCOAL

Re: Recovery Point Front
Have you got a bullbar?
My Ironman one comes with two snatch hooks.
As Matty & Loz said, never downsize on the bolts. Things can go VERY bad.<Rob> '12 Prado GX - https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/general/my-rig-build-up/32702-i-m-back-with-a-2012-150-gx-toorak-tractor

Re: Recovery Point Front
If the holes in the recovery hook are too big for the size of bolt perhaps you can get a machine shop to turn up a spacer to take up the gap.
If that is not an option then perhaps look around for a recovery hook that has holes that are the correct size for the bolts you need to use.

Re: Recovery Point Front
what type of hooks are you trying to mount?
Do you have a picture of it?
Might be able to offer suggestions/solution if we can see it. For example: if the hole is designed for a 12 mm bolt use a 12mm bolt, or 10mm hole use a 10mm bolt.
Smaller bolts have smaller sheer ratings (spacers or not) and thus whatever the "rated" load of the hook was, it will certainly be less when installed in this fashion.2014 D4D 150 GXL Automatic - CHARCOAL

Re: Recovery Point Front
I can't be sure as it's a while since I took the bolts out of my front hooks but I think the bolts for the front of a 90 where the hooks mount to the chassis are about 14mm so my guess is that he has hooks that have holes in them that are even bigger again.
While I agree about your comment of too small a bolt could be bad, you'd have to be going pretty hard to mangle the size of bolt suited to the front holes in the chassis rails.

Re: Recovery Point Front
i would sugest geting a peice of flat bar or angle iron and drilling some holes to match the bolts in the chassis and then another set for the tow hook and painting it up. im sure a steel merchant or machine shop would have some small scraps laying around that you could pick up for a couple of dollars. could also drill a hole large enough to take a shackle. just a thought1997 3.4 V6 Rv. mods; 1 1/2 inch bodylift, 285/75/R16 cooper STTs, 16x8 sunraysia style black steel rims '0' offset, 2 inch heavy duty springs, bilstein shocks (80 series rear), GME remote mounted UHF.

G'day Folks,
I fear I am reigniting an old discussion but I'm confused...
After reading at least three threads relating to front recovery hooks / points etc for 90 series Prados I'm still none the wiser as to what I can do.
Specifically I have a 95 series with a factory bull bar, this has the integrated tie down points built into the mounting braket connecting the bar to the chassis and from what I have read I can't find any specific answers at to what rated points I can put on my vehicle without replacing the entire bar.
There was some discussion a while back re Lukey (I think) making points for our vehicles but I don't know if this was successful or not.
I live in Adelaide and would like to know what I can bolt on or where I could buy some points, preferably loops not hooks.
Any thoughts...

Pretty standard way to do it. Don't use the bars built in tie down points. That metal is like cheese.

Custom Front Points for 95 series with OME alloy bar
After researching forums other websites and speaking with PP members and 4x4 accessory providers it became increasingly evident that obtaining recovery points for my 95 Series with OME alloy bar wasn't going to happen.
Initially I was going to bolt a custom flat point to the side of the existing tie downs (higher up) (there is another thread showing a mock-up of the design. After some further discussions it was decided the best option would be to utilise the current chassis anchor points and also use the existing structure as additional bracing material.
As a result I made some custom points. I used a 200mm off cut of 150 x 150 structural steel.
I cut this down to two 85 lengths of 40 x 100 drilled 4 holes into each; two to receive longer bolts to mount into the existing chassis locations, one to tie the new points to the side of the current structure and a 30mm hole to accommodate a shackle.
Fitting the points was tight and slow took some fine tuning to get the bolts locked up nice and tight but at the end of the day all was OK. I also removed the old tie down points to make room
For those interested I've attached a couple of pictures.
