  • Automatic gearbox failure

    My 2002 Prado has just done slightly over 50000 km. When I was just driving on a tarmac road I hit a small pothole and the automatic gearbox disconnected the gear as if it had jumped to neutral mode. I tried to engage all different gears, even in the transfer gear box but the vehicle cannot move. I have just towed it home hundreds of kilometers. Can anyone help me how to solve this problem? The gearbox does not engage any gear. It shows on the control light that it is in drive mode or whatever mode selected, but the car always behaves as if it is in neutral mode. It cannot move at all. The gearbox oil is at its normal level.

    If the dash light says you are in "D" no matter where the shifter is, my guess would be the selector linkage is the problem.

    Get it checked by a mech/transmission specialist, and if it is the linkage it would be a cheaper fix than a new auto box. The 90's come with pretty tough boxes, so I'd be very surprised if a pot hole could kill it.

      Just a thought... I am guessing you have checked, but is the transfer case in neutral?

        I have checked the transfer gear and it is engaged. I also tried it in different modes. The control light is only in D when the selector is also in D. I mean it just works normal. But the car does not move at all.

          Just a thought but have you tried locking the centre diff ?
          Also when in D and you attempt to drive is there any abnormal sounds or any sound at all from the gearbox or diffs ?

          I'm thinking perhaps you have had a CV or axle failure and all drive is going to broken axle (free wheeling in effect) ?

            I agree with Declan; it would be something simple that has failed like a linkage. A total transmission failure, although possible, is unlikely :wink:

              How big was this pothole. The auto box in the Prado is the same one that is used in the 80 and 100 series Landcruiser, so it is a very strong box, a pothole would be very unlikely to kill an auto box, I would say it is a linkage problem, the gear display would still move about and say what gear you are in, but the box wont move because it hasn't registered a gear change, the most likely senario is, when the linkage fell out, it would have knocked the box into "N", hence no gears. Unless it was a massive pothole, and the box went from "D" to "R", then you would have a problem.

                You're right crozza. Going from D to R at speed wouldn't end well.

                I sugest you have a look under the car and check the linkage. I'm pretty sure it runs parallel to the front prop shaft. Make sure it's connected at both ends and there isn't too much play in any of the links.
