  • How much fluid in a TD auto?

OK, new question regarding a 2000 TD Auto, just changing the ATF in the car. Last time I simply filled till I hit the mark on the dipstick, this time i read the manual?? It says 2 lts capacity. The old fluid I've drained out is more like 5 lts?
So I've added the specified 2 lts and it barely covers the the end of the dipstick (say 40mm)
    What gives?
I've checked with an older model Prado workshop manual and with the Owners Manual we got with it from new.

Its a bit confusing. The total capacity of the transmission is something like 11L but you'll never all that out simply by removing the drain plug. Last time I drained the ATF I think about 5L drained out.

You should go off what the dip stick says and add more till its between the cold marks (or hot marks if you've been driving it and its at operational temp)

Remember to check the fluid level you have to have the engine running, move the gear selector from Park through each gear and back to Park before reading the dip stick.

Hi Fellas. Not a lot to be gained by simply draining the auto trans oil and topping up as the amount of oil remaining in the torque convertor, cooling system and galleries is greater than that which has been changed. If you did that say a half dozen times running it around the block between each change it might do some good. Is "totally" worth taking into a shop with a flushing machine and doing it properly. Doesn't cost the earth and cleans out the total system. A huge difference in transmission performance also. Is also worth getting them to check out the magnets - last one I did of mine had a bunch of little wee needle rollers on the magnets (bugger). $$$$$$$$. Cheers.
