  • Diff and Transmission Breather Extensions

I have been considering to extend my diff, transmission etc breathers.

My vehicle is a 1999 Prado V6 with auto transmission.

I have not properly inspected the front diff, gearbox and transfer box as yet but to save myself some time, does anyone know what the standard breather arrangement is likely to be?

eg I know there is a breather pipe extension visible in the engine bay, is it for the front diff only or are breathers from the transmission and transfer box joined into it?

The extension in the engine bay is for the front diff only.
There is no extension on the rear diff, the breather is on
    top of the diff itself.

I've extended my front diff breather higher, and added
one to the rear diff (entendid the breather up into the rear
jack storage compartment in the body).

I looked at doing the transfer case, but couldn't figure out
an easy enough way of doing this one so left it as is. So
    far all has been good.

Yes it did look complicated hence my query. Maybe someone will help us out later.

I did the rear diff as well. I couldn't find a way to get the hose in to the body, so it's jammed between the plastic rear bumper and the body on the left of the rear door, with a knot in the end so it doesn't slip out. Kinda primitive, but hopefully it'll help!

When I do mine, I think that I will run the rear breather line up into the engine bay, unless I can find a pathway without drilling holes in the rear somewhere.

There is a rubber grommet under the rear passenger side that leads up into the panel where the jack is stored (hope that makes sense). I enlarged the hole in the grommet, fed the breather hose through, and then RTV Siliconed around to make the grommet dust/water proof again.

Thanks Prado4x4 (John). That is really useful information. I will take a look when I get to do the job.

I'll go looking for that. I'll need to get an air line through to the outside world as well, so I'll probably use the same spot.

I did the rear diff breather as per the instruction from LCOOL (http://www.lcool.org/technical/90_serie ... thers.html) web site. The only thing, I used 2 meters of fuel hose to do the job. I followed the brake line off the rear axle and then travelled it up beside the fuel hoses into the left panel up beside the jack. 1 hour job and costed $20 for all the parts to do front and rear breathers. You will need some salastic to seal the grommet that you cut to get the hose into the panel.

Re: Diff and Transmission Breather Extensions

                    Hey,

Can second or third or forth that running the diff breathers into the jack void in the rear panel is the go, never smelt anything in my car either..

But onto the transfer and gearbox breathers... for some reason I didn't really think about these when doing the diffs cause they are a bit higher i guess but thinking its a good idea now, anyone got any info or photos of theirs?? Or will I have to post a report in a few weeks and finally give something back to this forum which I have read so so much on.

                    Cheers
                    Luke

Re: Diff and Transmission Breather Extensions

Posting into an ooold thread here ... but ... what's the easiest way to lift the chasis to get access to the rear diff breather? All I have at my disposal at the moment is the vehicle bottle jack, jack stands, possibly a loaner trolley jack. I just can't seem to get under the vehicle enough to get sufficient access to the breather.

Jacking the vehicle up by the rear jack points doesn't really give you much room to get your hand in to remove the existing breather and screw in the new one.

The front breather was like a 5min job

                            G'day PP Gurus,

I found this old thread. I extended both diff breathers on my 2002 95 auto on the weekend and wanted to also do the breather for the transfer case.
Has anyone managed to do this?
I found the breather located on the top passanger side but I'm at a loss on how to remove it. It doesn't appear to be threaded or at least I cant get a spanner to grip and I don't want to pull it just in case its not meant to be pulled out.
Any ideas on how to change it out would be appreciated.
While Im at it, is there a breather for the auto trans?

                            ta

                              Hi
                              I'm in the same situation.
I have a manual 5 speed 2000 model and have found the breathers on the gearbox but they look like they are a press fit.

Any advice on how to remove them?

                              Regards

                              JK
