  • Auto not shifting when in low range

I own a 1996 diesel with an auto transmission. When low range is selected the auto does not seem to want to change gear unless reved hard. It's as if the electronics are taking vehicle speed into account, not just rpm. Is this normal?

The shift pattern is definitely different in low range. The computer is programmed to maintain higher RPM than normal. Your accelleration (foot/throttle pressure) also has a bearing on how early it'll change up (the less you press, the earlier it change).

In my 2002 (so not sure if it'll be the same thing) the hift pattern in low range is very different.
It seams to use a predetirmined rpm before it'll shift to the next gear and it will not shift to OD no matter what you do.
I usually select 2nd start and shift manually to 1st if I ever need it and find this helps a bit.
I've often thought that I'll disconnect the low range switch on the side of the box (up high out of view according to the wksp manual) to see if this will have any effect on the shift pattern but have never got around to it. Thinking is that the ecu will think it's in high range and use the high range shift patterns instead of the low range ones making for more relaxed shifting when using low throttle inputs
