  • Squeek in transfer case

Was pulled up on the weekend for a break after a long drive with car turned off in neutral with park break on and heard a squeek coming from under the car, on inspection I narrowed it down to the transfer case as when i turned the front drive shaft one way the squeek would stop and when turned the other way it would return.
All this was quiet wierd as the car had been switched off for about 3 minutes, the noise sounded like something rubbing on something.

Any help on this matter would be great

      Gday coatesy

Answer: Was it when you turned the drive shaft clockwise?

If so it could possibly be your hand brake shoes!

Reason: The shoes have a trail and leading edge on them.... Turn the drive shaft anti-clockwise and the car will move forward and the leading edge of the shoes will grab the rear inner disc drum (That is where the handbrake shoes are)...... Turn the drive shaft clock-wise and the car will roll backward against the trailing edge of the shoes and cause a gudder noise from the shoes as they are designed to grab the rear disk drum in the forward motion as most vehicles spend 98% going forward.

The other only thing that i think it could be is a dry oil-seal on the drive shaft but it would squeal in both directions and sort of un-likely as it would squeal its guts out whilst driving.

Try and see if it does it without the handbrake on. (On a flat surface of course so that the car don't roll away) Lol.

Only guessing but it was the first thing that came to mined based on your description because if your handbrake was holding you would not be able to turn the drive shaft at all!

      Cheers

Hi Coatesy. My bet would be a dry u-joint. Check for brown fretting powder around the joints. Cheers.

Thanks for the ideas guys, checked direction which makes the noise and it is clockwise, but not sure how it could be park break shoes as it is the front drive shaft and it was parked and shut down when found. Saying that I have started to notice the noise whilst driving and it briefly goes away when you tap the clutch so started thinking throw out bearing but then it still does it after the car is turned off so in two minds now. Will check uni joints and oil seals tomorrow and gearbox oil as all this has started about 2 weeks after some windscreen depth water crossings at the palmer goldfields after being stuck there for a week by the river ( damn wet season ) lol

Well checked to oil in the transfer case and gearbox last night, gearbox was fin but not sure if I had water in the oil or oil in the weater in the transfer case... today have done 3 oil changes and test drives and still a bit milky so another few to come yet I guess unless there is a cleaning adative out there that I have not found yet. But on the up side the squeek is gone so now just to get rid of the milky oil, thanks for the advise guys and will let you know how many oil changes it takes to get rid of all the water....
