  • Clutch/Gearbox noises

    Hi
Just bought a Diesel 2000 TD 90 series and have a bit of a manual gearbox rattle.

No noise when the clutch is pressed in but when let out, there's quite a bit of noise.
Same problem whether its in gear or neutral.
Had this problem 30 years ago on another car but can't remember what I replaced to fix it. Seem to recall a thrust bearing.

    Any clues?

So no one has had a thrust bearing replaced yet then? seems unlikely.

I reckon the thrust or 'throw out' bearing is the problem but before I pull anything down, can someone advise what the bearing is sliding on?
I've read various reports of a steel sleeve and an aluminium one so who has actually seen whats in there.
Here's an example of a broken steel one -

but if its an aluminium one then I might have this problem also-

Sounds like a thrust bearing... Had a similar issue with my last 60 Series Cruiser.

If the noise is not present when you have released the clutch then it is not likely to be the thrust bearing.

By your description, it is more likely to be gearbox input shaft bearing but can't be sure by your description alone.

Thrust bearing, so you may as well do the clutch while your at it

Hi I also have a gearbox or clutch noise that I'm unsure of if anyone has a suggestion. 90 series manual petrol has done 330000km and 200000km since gearbox was replaced under warranty. And when I depress the clutch I can just hear a slight whine noise. But only when the clutch is depressed.Aany ideas? thanks Rob
