  • Rear diff torque settings please?

    Hi

After some rock crunching, my 95 has developed a very slow oil leak from between the rear diff carrier and the main housing. All the bottom bolts are a bit loose but as the bolts feel a bit like cheese, I don't want to shear one off.

Anyone have the torque setting for these bolts?

You just cant tighten them up, reason being is the gasket is broken, most likely from copping a hit on the pumpkin, you will have to, remove the rear tail shaft, drain out all the oil from the diff, undo all the bolts around the pumpkin, pull the diff out, clean both faces of the join, you can now either use a new gasket, or just use silicon sealer on the face of the diff housing, remembering to do a circle around all the bolt studs so it doesnt leak through the nut and bolts, and then put it all back together, you only need to do the nuts up tightly, there is no real torque setting for them, just dont overtighten.

Shit! Bit more than I bargained for but thanks Crooza.
Having removed the tailshaft, I presume the axle shafts have to be pulled out as well. Is there anything in there I should know about or will the shafts just pull out once unbolted?

How many 100s of kilos does the diff assembly weigh?, I don't have access to a hoist.

      cheers

Yeah mate axel's out........the diff center won't weigh that much around 30kg.......your going to need help once you put the diff center back in.....somene to turn the center and some one to push the axel back in......no biggie but it does help and not entirely impossible on your own either.

Get some good sealant just don't use silicon get some sort of Permatex,RTV sealant.........Ahhh the joys of repairing diffs...........I just recently had to do a BT50 rear diff on a work ute..........on the side of a dirt track.........great!

            No worries, appreciate the help.

Does anyone know of a tutorial in axle pulling?
I've not done anything younger than 50 yr old sports cars so wonder if ABS sensors etc are a problem. Nice if there was a tutorial somewhere?

            cheers

The only thing to look out for is the axle seal when you slide the axle out, dont let the axle drag on the bottom lip of the seal. You only need to slide the axle out enough to clear the diff. The axle is not a press in type like the old sports cars your use to, the ABS sensors are well out of the way. Another thing you will have to do is unclip the brake line, this will allow enough flex in the brake line to allow you to do what you need to do.

                Thanks for that Crooza
Doesn't sound like I'll get into too much trouble there.
