Hi, I have a 2001 V6 with 240k on the clock. When under hard accelleration in first gear, or when bouncing up any steep hills I get a loud clunking noise. It sounds like a CV clunk but I took it to a driveline specialist and the only issue they could find was a bit of slip in the rear tailshaft. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Bushes is the other possibility. Jack up so one wheel at a time is just off the ground. Put the car on stands and then use something like a piece of pipe or box (I use the tirfor handle) and wriggle the wheel around and see if you can get the clunk. Then you might need an observer to identify the actual bush. Any chance it could be the ball joints. What do I look for if these are on the way out?Comment

Turns out that the chain in the transfer case has stretched and is skipping over the cogs under heavy load. Simple but costly fix.Comment

The guys at Hart transmissions in Brendale sorted it out. I cannot reccommend them highly enough. When I picked the prado they came straight out with the worn pieces and show me what wrong. Also recommend On and Off road in Brendale as the guy there test drove my car and instead of trying to tell me it was other things like CV etc to make money off me (which others already had done) he put me straight on to Hart Transmissions.Comment
