Its precisely the shit fight that has prevented me from taking it back...

If it was inertia etc then corrugations would set it off and its had some very bad roads since this started.
Definately not inertia anyway as if you keeps the revs constant (accelerator pressed) and gently press the clutch, it'll come on.
Also odd that its confined to mid rev range and only on two gears (it was 2nd gear that was worked on even though there's no wiring associated with that). Its definitely connected to revs as well, drive with low revs and change gear whilst its struggling and there's no flash, do it at normal revs with a very smooth, no jerk or speed loss change and it lights.

makes no sense at all which is why I wondered if the engine computer might be involved somewhere.

I don't have a wiring diagram for the 90 but I highly doubt it is anything other than a couple of wires between switches to the light in the dash. Disconnect both plugs and then drive. If the problem continues then it is not the lever or float. You wont have any choice other than to keep going along these lines to diagnose the problem. The dash cluster comes out easily enough so if someone who has a wiring diagram can confirm which wires are the two signals you can disconnect one by one to find which circuit is causing the issue. I still put my money on a wire that makes contact with earth through being squashed or rubbed through. Neither is not necessarily the result of the gearbox work that was done.

Ok I've checked wiring diagram. You need to find the red wire with a white trace. By the looks of it the main ecu is not involved. Just has the red/ white wire with the switch for the the hand brake/ fluid level and a earth. Has yours got abs and traction control. If so the traction control ecu has the same wire running to it. Hope this helps Kris
