  • HOW TO: Replace a CV shaft / CV axle on a 90/95 Series Prado

Here's a full guide on how to change a complete CV shaft on the 90 series Prado. Note: when I took photos for this guide, I just happened to be changing BOTH CV shafts on my vehicle, so be aware that photos were taken of both sides.

    1) Find a level place to work, and loosen the filler plug on the front diff, and then the drain plug. If you're confident you'll be completing the entire job, drain the oil. If it's your first time, I'd suggest leaving the oil in place until you're confident that you can tackle the entire job.

    - I've made this the first step on purpose as it's often a difficult to loosen these plugs for the first time.

              - Gently push inner CV shaft into the diff until it stops (that’s the cir-clip preventing it from going further), and then use impact to drive the shaft further in. I've found the best impact method is to use the inner joints sliding ability to "hammer" the CV shaft in. To do this, hold the CV shaft straight, pull the outer CV shaft outwards whilst holding the inner cup in the diff, then suddenly push against the entire CV shaft to quickly hammer it in. I find it normally pops in within 3 hammers. Here's a video to demonstrate:

                    35) Fill the diff with 1.1L of gear oil.

                    - Factory type is SAE hypoid gear oil GL5, but if you have lockers installed, see the lockers manufacturer for recommendations.

                    - Vehicle must be level to achieve correct quantity. When oil leaks from the filler plug it is full. Do not force more in as it will affect the pressure inside the diff.

                    36) Re-install bash plates.

                    All done!

Admins - should this be made a sticky?

Bubba80 - All MT tyres are noisy If you'd like to know more about how they compare to other brands/models please post your query in a tyre related thread, so we can keep this CV axle thread on topic. Thanks.
