  • lsd problem? after water crossing most likely not related.

As the title stated it feels to me as the lsd is playing up. works quite well going forwards but sometimes (twice) when going in reverse it was shuddering and i think one rear wheel was stationary while the other one was spinning. I have dif breathers and checked they hadn't come of in the multiple river crossings. The problem dissapears after about half a metre or less of travel in reverse. It happens in high and low range with transfer case lock on but as it has only happened twice (once in high range and once in low range) this may not be important. Diff oil level was checked the day before. Any thoughts on this would be most welcome.

I am surprised you have a Toyota LSD that still works...

Yes it still works, don't know why. I guess it could be the low km's just clocked 316,000 barely broken in.

Sure its not the handbrake pads ??? These like to swell up when wet. Cant say I ever went backwards after a river/water crossing in either of my 90's so I never felt it. My bet would be some thing to do with handbrake and at 316 thou and if the diff has never been touched its just wishfull thinking your LSD is still working, there shit after 40 thou lol.......Cheers Steve

[IMG][/IMG] The handbrake on these has its own shoes not like some other vehicles which use the normal footbrake disc brake pad as the handbrake. How mauch play do you have in the handbrake ?? Maybe adjusted up just a tad to tight....Cheers Steve

The handbrake pads have just been replaced and are likely to be the culprit they were adjusted to allow a little to bed in. And the LSD is working at least partially as you can sometimes feel it take up in the mud.

Thanks Steve, have recently done massive amounts of work on the front end, rear disks, pads and really didn't want to spend another bucketload on the diff/driveline.
