  • Take care with the ol' front diff

Just a heads up for everyone from my last 4 months
The front diff in our prado has shattered the side and spider gears in the diff centre twice - the second time was only 3000k's after the first time.
It failed on steep stuff when she got a bit of wheel slip happening. Proved to be a weak (and expensive) point in our vehicle so I thought i'd put it out there in the forum for all to see and be aware of

Thanks for the heads up Mick.

The diff club is getting so big over in the 120 guys I was thinking I should get someone to show me how to disable drive to the front diff... just in case
    Cheers, Leon

      Hello Mick,

From what I have read the front diffs on the 95's are weaker than the rears, while on the 120's it is the opposite.

You must be havin too much fun in the hills breakin 2 diffs in 3000kms

I took out my front tail shaft and put the transfer case into 4WD High to limp it home. Still had bits of gear teeth floating around inside the diff (made some funky noises now and then), but no big clunks and bangs in the stuffed diff were gonna hurt the transfer case aswell thanks very much!!
A mate taught me that cos on his 80 series when he did a cv he pulled the front shaft out and in those you just need to press the diff lock button to lock the transfer - he pulled some awesome donuts in that thing while it was 2WD
