  • Dual mass or solid!

Hi there i have purchased a 1999-2000 KZJ95r-GKMNTQ landcruiser prado with the 1kz-te engine and a manual gearbox. I can hear the thrust bearing running so want to replace it and the clutch whilst im in there.

what i would like to know before i pull the gearbox out is if it has a dual mass fly wheel or solid?

Solid mass flywheel ... dual mass is not in any prado.

Having a quick look online at toyotadiy.com - it appears your Prado is Aussie spec with a flywheel part number of 13405-67070. The dual mass part number for the Jap spec car is 13450-67021. I'm sure the Aussie spec 1KZ came with a solid flywheel but are not 100%. A good indication on that website is that the Aussie spec flywheel price is half that of the Jap spec which makes sense.

I've had a 1KZ powered Hilux Surf in the past that popped the dual mass flywheel. I ended up putting in a solid flywheel and clutch from a local 90 series Prado. At the time I was told Aussie spec 1KZ cars didn't get the troublesome dual mass flywheel. Mine you this was 10 years ago so my recollection is hazy.

And thank God for that!!!! Pity Mazda and Jackeroo owners.
It's not always possible to sub a solid for dual mass, in Mazdas at least it can set up some horrendous shuddering when engaging.

the shudder matter is true in quite a few conversions to solid mass... engine vibration also... there were a few diesel transits where they actually used the dual mass to smooth out the engine vibrations and once changed to a solid you back teeth would rattle out ...

                  Try this website - http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html

Enter your frame number that you supplied in your original post. Comes up as Aussie spec. Hope that helps.

That's weird - shows up as manual for me. Either way - all good. Seems to be Aussie spec which should mean a solid flywheel.

I'd pull the flywheel and get it surfaced if not too badly hot spotted or cracked, but I have a habit of doing everything I can while it is open. I'm too old now to do everything twice!! Also get out the shop manual and double check the diaphragm finger height, some flywheels and covers (even genuine) have been found to be machined wrong and be way off. The diaphragm fingers must be at the correct height or the clamping force will be off. There have been many clutches in the past that didn't make 40K due to this. You do have to have the whole assy on the bench and torqued up to check this easily.
