Hi. Did the 90 series Prado (2000), petrol auto model come out with a factory fitted limited slip diff in Australia? If so, does it make much diference to performance? :?

Prados have LSD across all models.... However they are more slip than clip especially with a few kms on them...

Re: LSD for prado
ive found that my lsd works quite good, it has 160,000 on the clock and yeh. i was playin round with the car one day and took out the front drive shaft so that i could drive round in rear wheel drive. you can hear it workin on the bitumen around corners, and if under it hard enough the front inside wheel will lift off the ground.

Re: LSD for prado
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm not convinced mine is working at all. As soon as I get crossed up and lift 2 opposing wheels, I stop dead. I would have expected some kind of effort from the rear in this situation if the LSD was doing anything. I have 230k on clock. Is there a quick way you can test by jacking up the rear ?David

Re: LSD for prado
That's OK.
Most LSD's won't hold on when crossed up like that. My manual doesn't state but one test with LSD's is that there is a certain tension that they are meant to hold before breaking loose.
It's done by jacking up one side, chocking the wheel on the ground and using a tension wrench (big one) to turn the jacked up wheel. there will be a certain newton meter reading that it's supposed to hold to. I think I saw this in a holden manual when I was an apprentice.
Something else that can re-invigorate a sloppy LSD is to change the oil with the correct grade. maybe someone put the wrong oil in at some stage.
Some manufacturers will specify a special brand and grade of oil to make LSD's and gearboxes (for the syncros) work better.
Does anyone have any clues? I'm keen to see if there is.98 3400V6 manual

Re: LSD for prado
Next time your crossed up and lose traction try appling a little hand brake.... that will slow the spinning rear wheel and load up the LSD a bit. Hopefully that will provide enough traction to get things moving forward again.... poor mans traction control
Oil for LSD is Hypoid gear oil API Gl-5 SAE 90
5 and 6 speed manuals are API GL-4 or GL-5 SAE 75W-90
