  • Do we have a diff club?

If so I just joined it on Sunday

Shattered something in the REAR diff at LCMP.
Guess I'll be looking into a rear air locker in the new year
    Cheers, Leon

Leon, you never have any problems with the rear diff before. I wonder if towing the CT may have weaker something?
There is a diff club in the 120 "drive train" section.

Three quarter way up club rally circuit. a very rutted out section. I'll let Leon fill in the rest of the details.

Thought I'd keep it separate from the 120 section... just so it's more relevant if someone DOES actually use the search function

Im sorry to hear of your loss Snaga, but looks like youll gain from it
i was having a look through the overlander trip reports and came across a very unsightly photo of a prado mounting a tray back. Am about to go have a look at the pradopoint trip report.

Re: Do we have a diff club?

                  Hi all.
New to this forum, but I am on a few others in NZ.
Hey Snaga, I just joined you in the blown rear diff 2 days ago. (have blown a few diffs in my other rigs over the years, and you never get used to the sound of one going bang )
I replaced my whole diff head with a 4.11 KZN 130 surf diff head. Problem is that the Prado appears to be 4.10 ratio, enough of a difference to cause front tyre chirp, and will no doubt have the ctr diff working a little and wear tyres down quicker that normal.
Question I have is: do the front diffs in the 90 series Prado the same as the KZN130 or LN130 front diffs. If so then I will change the front diff as well.

                  Cheers in advance.

Bugger, sorry to hear about your diff Rokhound You said it was the rear also? Strange, I thought it was the front that was the weaker of the two in the 90 series :?

Re: Do we have a diff club?

The bit that perplexes me the most is that I was able to break a rear diff just with handbrake pressure  .
I was cross axled (in low range locked) on a very small bank, so kept applying handbrake until i could just get the rear wheel that had traction to turn. Was working okay for a while and then bang went the diff. We have always found that the fuse (or weak part) of a rear toyota drive line is the drive shaft (twisted a few of them off over the years  ), but to have a crown wheel go with what was essentially only handbrake pressure kind of blew me away. My RC has a 4pinnion 8" diff head (same as the prado does) and I have never had a problem (due to loading it up) with that one, and it runs 40" tyres, dual transfer cases and an EFI Holden V8!.
I seem to have some sort of transmission wind up in the prado at the moment as well. Just going out to check if it is a ctr diff that refuses to disengage, or something more sinister, like slightly different diff ratios (hope it is the former, sort of )
The selector lever seems to be moving through it's range fine, but the lights on the dash (that inform you that the ctr diff is locked) are not showing up, and it is not a fuse. Strange.

I thinking your center diff is not disengaged... after all the reason it's there is to allow for a difference in speed between the front and rear wheels.

Are you you sure about the 4.11 ratio? I'd be checking (on your vehicle by physically turning it and counting revolutions) before I spent anymore money.

You are right Mick. ctr diff is not disengaging. So i will yank it out and see what is up with it. There is definitely something in there that is not happy at all.

Good luck with it, hopefully nothing expensive. Take lots of pics... I haven't seen inside a Prado case yet....

Here is a shot of the rear diff carnage anyway.
