  • Auto Gearbox problem

Hi everyone, When reversing up a steep hill or on the beach my Prado makes a noise and shudders. It only does it under low revs. If i stab the accelerator it makes the noise for a second but then is fine. It evens does it when i hold my foot on the brake and try to reverse. It doesn't seem to slip just makes a weird sound that comes from the rear brake area. It drives perfectly in all forward gears. I had a transmission flush done at toyota about a year ago and they said it was fine. Could it be some sort of pressure problem cause it only happens on the initial take off in reverse when the car is under load. Any help and suggestions would be great. Cheer's Dave :?

    Re: Auto Gearbox problem

Wondering if anyone has had this come up since the original posting.
Just had mine do the same thing as Davo's while reversing in the soft sand but when put in low range it all seemed fine!!!
Sounded like the gearbox maybe. It has recently had a new oil and filter fitted to the box.
    Anyone??
    Fritz.

      Re: Auto Gearbox problem

I had mine do this just recently on the front lawn.....I drove the front wheels forward slighlty downhill over the lip of some very thick but cut grass onto some pavers. I then selected reverse & reved the engine & the car moved slowly up the lip & up hill reving more than expected & then seemed to "engage" & then drive in reverse properly...

I'm suspecting it was slow to select reverse properly.....maybe a slipping band or something?

        Re: Auto Gearbox problem

I'm not 100% on the internals of the Prado gearbag but some generic things to look at/consider

*Is the oil level correct when at operating temp. If not this could be the problem (low oil level) and the solution could be simple as topping up the oil.
*Is it slow to select reverse once at operating temp. This could be caused by low oil level, a worn band/clutch pack, low oil pressure in the box, valve sticking in the valve body or even old oil in need of replacement
        * Do you get the same/similar symptoms when in 1st gear (selected on lever) doing the same thing. Some autos use the same clutch pack/band for 1st (when it's selected) and for reverse, so doing this test could isolate the problem a bit more if the symptoms are similar.

          Re: Auto Gearbox problem

          Thanks for the thoughts dhula,
As for your quetions, the oil level is correct, it isn't slow to select reverse and doesnt do it in any other gear. Once in low range it doesnt seem to do it in reverse either but that could be because the low gearing in the transfer takes the load of the gbox.
The only thing I could think of is that the bands may be slipping but only in reverse. I really hope this is nothing to worry about because I dont wanna know what a rebuild would cost.
