Hello, doing interior mods (1997 Prado 3-door, auto), messed up my automatic shifter handle and now need (and want) to put on a custom knob/controller.
I have seen many videos of non-Toyota shifter mods, but not of a Prado 90 or a similar Toyota mechanism. For all other brands there needs to be a slightly complicated knob that has a button to move the shifter out of park or into reverse (overdrive another story) but for the Prado 90 it seems this is not required... or I'm missing something?
The mechanics of the system (Important Parts capitalized): There is Metal Tube that comes up from the plastic Gear Indicator Consol that has a Threaded Rod that sticks out a couple of centimeters more. There’s a Plastic Piece screwed onto the Threaded Rod that (formally) transfers the thumb-pressed horizonal motion of the OEM button (to move out of park, into reverse) to vertical motion and push down the Threaded Rod to change gears somewhere below. The OEM Handle enclosed all of that and went around and was screwed tight to the Metal Tube.
Right now I am driving the car with a shop towel wrapped around the plastic piece and pushing that and thus the threaded rod down to change gears.
Can I just use a solid cylindrical slug that I will tap with the same thread (I'd appreciate the exact dimensions) as the rod and will then replace the Plastic Piece? Then put that up whatever handle I choose? I’m thinking a small wood one but a golf ball did come into my mind as my car is dark blue with white rims. As there is gravity I don’t want it to be too heavy and move the rod easily.
But is there a problem with doing is this way? Or do I need to create a Handle similar to the original, that goes around (and screws into) the Metal Tube and then, like the videos I’ve seen, has "button" (vertical being the easiest) that is independent of the body and presses down on the Threaded Rod?
