  • F & R Axle Breather valve Location??

Hello i am looking for the location of the front axle breather tube, and also the tranny breather tube.

I am wanting to extend the hoses into the engine bay, to reduce water contamination in the axles.

The rear axle breather tube is really easy to locate, so I wont be needing that location.

In the 120 the front diff breather is already extended up into the engine bay. This is located near the cranking battery. Might be similar in the 90, especially in your late model 90.

As Schaffer has indicated the front breather is already extended, comes up around the same level (and side) as the oil filter - just look for a hose that has the same sort of breather as the rear diff. From memory its attached to the wheel arch.

The transmission breathers (two) are located on the top of the transmission and you have to remove the centre consul and an inspection plate to get to them. There are some nice pictures on the LCOOL http://www.lcool.org

Re: F & R Axle Breather valve Location??

        Hi all,

I extended the diff breathers on my rig today and also managed to get to the auto trans breather (that was heaps of fun). Due to the poxy rain here in WA and also due to the fact I am on nightshift and needed to sleep today I didnt get to the transfer case.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what size the fitting is in the transfer case breather? Is it 1/8" BSP like the others? Would just like to know so I can get the fitting before pulling the existing breather out.

        Cheers
        Chriso

P.S. 120 owners - its not linked to the trans breather like you lucky buggers...

Well I got the transfer case breather sorted. Removed the plastic stone guard from under the passenger side for better access. It seems to me the breather is a pressed in type as I could not feel/see any sort of flange to get a spanner on to.

I simply got under there with a long skinny flat blade and "un crimped" the round top of the breather until I could pop it off the inner tube part. Then fitted my fuel hose and clamped securely. Care must be taken not to kink the hose at this point as there is limited room between the 'box and the trans tunnel. Then simply routed the hose along the same path as the trans harness with cable ties (thus avoiding contact with the shifter mechanisms) and all the way up to the firewall with the other breathers. Fitted a new breather/valve and sweet, I am ready to go!

Now to find some water crossings

Here's some photos for anyone working on this in the future.

Rear diff - Here's the original breather and it's replacement (bought from Pirtek, but I've seen them in Autobarn as well).

Rear diff - Here you can see the breather location. The photo was taken from passenger side, looking to the rear.

Front diff - Replacement of the plug wasn't necessary, as I was able to connect into the existing steel hose. It extends from the diff, to about chassis height (circled in red). From there, a black hose ran half way up the engine bay, and terminated with a breather (circled in blue). Unfortunately the photo does not show the original components, just my replacements.

I combined both F/R with a T piece and terminated with a Z92 fuel filter.
