Hello, we have two of the great little beasts. One of them has thrown now for the third time the oil seal on the rear axle, (we are getting about 20,00km per seal, no off-road work). Then this necessitates the replacement of the wheel bearing, hand brake shoes and sometimes the disk pads. The only issue that we can see is that the first time the seal was replaced it was not located to the correct depth in the axle housing. There is some depth adjustment that we understood is able to be allowed for. Or have we got this wrong. A service garage (not a Toyota dealership) undertook this the first two times. Now (and we have out own full workshop now) have decided undertake this ourselves. Is there an exact measurement from the front face of the axle flange to the outside face of the oil seal once it is fitted, this can be measured with a depth part of a vernier caliper. Or as the oil seal needs to seat onto the shaft collar, how close to the ABS collar can the oil seal sit? Any help or exploded diagrams would be greatly appreciated.

Hey mate, I dont have this problem but a couple of things come to mind... Are you buying OEM Toyota brand seals? Are you lubricating the rubber seal when you put it in? Possibly overfilling your diff oil if cars arent on level ground when topping up the diff oil? Is the surface that comes into contact with the seal rubber completely clean and free of scratches/gouges? Just spit balling here...
